We had the good fortune of connecting with Karen Schumacher and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Karen, what do you attribute your success to?
The essence of my success can be concentrated into three foundational pillars that have profoundly influenced my journey.

First and foremost, it’s the invaluable power of relationships and reputation. Instead of relying on conventional marketing tactics, I prioritize the cultivation of authentic connections and the nurturing of trust with my clients and partners. This commitment has forged a robust network where my reputation for excellence precedes me. In fact, about 80% of my new business arises from referrals, a testament to the trust and confidence others place in my abilities.

Secondly, at the core of my professional philosophy is the guiding principle encapsulated in my tagline, “turn your learning into action.” Whether I’m conducting training sessions, coaching individuals, or offering consultancy services, my focus transcends ordinary instruction and it’s not merely about ticking off boxes; instead, I strive to instigate profound transformations, inspiring others to translate newfound knowledge into tangible, actionable changes in their personal and professional lives.

Lastly, integrity and ethical conduct are non-negotiable values that underlie every aspect of my business endeavors. One illustration of this commitment occurred when I declined an opportunity to provide executive coaching for two individuals with familial ties to a CEO. The CEO wanted to use me as his excuse in his decision, which had already made. Despite potential monetary benefits, I remained steadfast in my refusal to compromise my principles, opting instead to offer constructive guidance to the CEO, who declined.

In essence, my success is derived from fostering genuine relationships, adhering to a philosophy of actionable learning, and steadfastly upholding core values. These pillars not only propelled my professional growth but have also fostered a fulfilling journey where every interaction is grounded in authenticity and purpose, cultivating a culture of trust, empowerment, and integrity that defines my approach to professional engagement.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Life has a funny way of throwing curveballs, doesn’t it? For me, those curveballs were more like boulders crashing into my carefully laid plans.

I was the classic overachiever in my youth, driven by a clear vision of my future. Yet, in my final year of college, fate intervened, and my dreams were put on hold after I was the victim of a kidnapping and sexual assault. It was a bitter pill to swallow, having my meticulously crafted life plan come crashing down. Despite setbacks and delays, I persevered, guided by my unwavering faith and a belief that adversities do not define us but refine us. Eventually I went back to school and finished my degree after getting married and having children.

Then came 2013—a year that would test my resilience once again. I found myself unjustly ousted from a job I loved, caught in the crossfire of office politics. It was a devastating blow, but I refused once again to be a victim. Instead, I leaned into my faith and surrounded myself with positivity through my family, friends, and colleagues.

This pivotal moment not only led to the inception of Crescendo Leadership Development but also ignited a passion for empowering others to navigate their own trials and triumphs. Through speaking engagements, coaching sessions, and training workshops, I strive to impart invaluable lessons gleaned from my journey. I empower others to break free from negativity and embrace a life of purpose and positivity.

In 2022, I authored my first book, “More Than Your Mindset,” sharing the lessons I’ve learned along the way and making it an interactive self-help book.

Central to my philosophy are four guiding principles:
1. **Be Genuine:** Authenticity breeds connection. Trust, kindness, and honesty are the cornerstones of meaningful relationships.
2. **Be Generous:** True wealth lies in giving. Whether it’s time, effort, or resources, generosity fosters abundance and kindness.
3. **Be Gracious:** Extend grace to others as you have received. Treat everyone with respect, civility, and kindness, recognizing that grace is the cornerstone of compassion and understanding.
4. **Do Everything with Purpose:** Intentionality is key to personal growth. While we can’t control external events, we can choose how we respond.

As I continue to journey forward, I am committed to making a positive impact, one interaction at a time. Through storytelling, interactive sessions, and heartfelt connection, I aspire to change lives, transform teams, and elevate organizations. Together, let us embrace each day with intentionality, choosing positivity and purpose in every endeavor.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my best friend was visiting Cedar Rapids, IA for a week, I would make sure they experience the best the city has to offer. We have great little restaurants for breakfasts and brunches such as Lucky’s on 16th, Midtown Station, Oscar’s – but likely I would do most of the cooking!

There are several things we could do over the week:
• Take a leisurely stroll along the Cedar River, allowing us to enjoy the scenic views and vibrant downtown area.
• Spend an afternoon exploring the Czech Village/New Bohemia District, browsing unique shops and boutiques.
• Spend the morning exploring NewBo City Market, a vibrant marketplace featuring local vendors, artisans, and food stalls.
• Visit the Cedar Rapids Museum of Art to admire its impressive collection of American art, including works by Grant Wood.
• Explore the African American Museum of Iowa to learn about the rich history and culture of African Americans in Iowa.
• In the summer we would watch the Five Seasons Water Ski team perform.
• Head to Palisades-Kepler State Park for a day of hiking, picnicking, and enjoying the natural beauty of Iowa.
• Explore the Brucemore Mansion, a historic estate with beautifully landscaped gardens and captivating tours.
• Catch a performance at the Paramount Theatre, a historic venue showcasing live music, theater, and events or go to any of the local bars that offer outdoor live music on the weekends.
• Take a day trip to the nearby Amana Colonies, a group of historic villages known for their German heritage, charming shops, and delicious cuisine. Enjoy a traditional German meal at the Ox Yoke Inn or the Ronneburg Restaurant. Explore the shops and galleries, sampling locally-made crafts, wines, and baked goods.
• Depending on the time of the year, watch University of Iowa’s Hawkeyes play football, women’s basketballs, etc. Explore the campus.

We have newer restaurants in the downtown area that are fun such as Big Grove Brewing Company, a brewery offering craft beer and locally-inspired cuisine. We could go to Pickel Palace for drinks and dinner and where we could play pickle ball or play duckpin bowling. A definite must is a classic restaurant my husband and I love for both the food and the atmosphere is Vino’s/RG Books.

However, if my best friend were visiting, I would want to spend time talking and catching up. Likely I would have other family and friends over to play Euchre. 😊

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Acknowledging the pivotal role played by my family in my journey is essential, yet it transcends clichés when one comprehends the profound impact each member has had on my growth. From the unwavering support of my parents to the encouragement and challenges presented by my siblings, husband, and children, their influence has been transformative. Similarly, the guidance of exceptional leaders, genuine mentors, and a circle of remarkable friends has been instrumental in shaping my path.

However, attributing my success solely to human relationships would be incomplete without acknowledging the foundational role of my faith in God. Through life’s highs and lows, it’s been my faith that has provided unwavering support and guidance, shaping me into the person I am today.

In recounting the tools and resources that have contributed significantly to my journey, one stands out prominently—Real Colors®. I was first certified in Real Colors® temperament tool in 2003.
