We had the good fortune of connecting with Kate Firoved and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kate, where are your from? We’d love to hear about how your background has played a role in who you are today?
I grew up in Colorado Springs. Colorado is such a beautiful place with mountains, forests, huge rock formations, and breath-taking views. Being surrounded by open spaces and fresh air has had a huge impact on me and my business goals. We value the environment at the shop; composting, recycling, and emphasizing zero-waste whenever possible. I have lived in a few other places, but my heart has always been in Colorado, so I wanted to contribute to the positive growth of the state. Supporting local artists, makers, and charities helps to support our local economy and causes. I also believe the vibe of Colorado can’t be beat. The positive impacts of such a beautiful area are felt in the reduced stress and welcoming mood at the shop.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I have been working in various aspects of the coffee industry for years starting wtih a roaster internship while attending the Master’s Business program at the Univeristy of Denver. I also worked in coffee shops; really diving into the daily operations of shops which gave me a realistic view of the day-to-day operations of owning a business. I think having exposure to not only the higher-level aspect of business creation and development, but being a barista and an employee has given me a better appreciation for our employees, business development from the ground-up, and the impacts that a business can have on the local community.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Colorado Springs has so much to offer! I would start with a coffee and a biscuit sandwich at Carnelian Coffee. Our Honey Lavender Latte is a favorite. Fresh roasted coffee, steamed milk, house-made honey and lavender syrups, topped with lavender sugar. Our biscuits are made from scratch in-house and are the best in town. We have a relaxing and welcoming environment to ease you into the day and once you are powered up and ready to go, take a hike through Garden of the Gods. My favorite is the Siamese Twins Trail. You will see the beautiful rock formations and breathtaking mountain views. This is one of the most beautiful spots and is located just down the road from the shop. Afterwards, try a beer at OCC Brewing. A local brewery that has a coffee beer on tap, made with Carnelian Coffee! Then you can stroll the shops in Old Colorado City and grab dinner at one of the many restaurants in the area.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My family. My Mom and Dad have been really supportive in growing and helping the business. You might even see them working around the shop some days. I wouldn’t have been able to dedicate so much time and energy to my dream without their support. My boyfriend is also a co-owner of the shop and has really helped grow the business. He has been in the industry for over a decade and has a talent for food and coffee roasting that amazes me everyday. We have a similar vision and passion for the industry and supporting the local community.
