We had the good fortune of connecting with Katey Allen and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Katey, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
Ever since I was younger, I never fit in a box. I didn’t care much for school or sports. I always wanted to just be drawing and creating. As I got older people started asking me about college and a career, I never saw myself doing anything but art! Despite being made fun of for choosing a creative path in the past, it’s always what I knew I wanted to do.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
It’s never easy following your dreams & passions. It took a lot of hardship and self discovery to figure out my path. Every choice I make on a daily basis will affect my art and future. I have to be very mindful about the energy I put out into the world. This is why I do my best to create colorful and fun work. I want people to look at my creations and feel a sense of happiness. I wasn’t always the positive person I am today, and art really changed who I was for the better. I just want to use my gifts to share with others!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Denver truly has a lot of great places to enjoy! Of course we would have to go to RiNo first. It’s fun to see all of the murals and graffiti there. I had the opportunity to paint in the heart of RiNo multiple times last summer, which I am very proud of myself for. So I’m sure I’d show that off a little haha. A lot of my friends as well as my significant other have murals in the area too so I like to show them off. One of my favorite places for drinks and dinner is Barcelona wine bar! That place is always a must. Denver Central Market is another fave in the area. Lots of options to choose from.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Honestly I am self made for the most part but I wouldn’t be where I am today if it weren’t for the art community of Denver. I’ve received a lot of support here while emerging as a new artist and I am extremely grateful!
