Meet Katie Chavez | Travel Blogger

We had the good fortune of connecting with Katie Chavez and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Katie, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I have always felt compelled to write as a form of creative expression and I love traveling so it made sense to start writing about my travels. It started as a hobby but I became more passionate about it as time went on and I started to see it as a viable business as well.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I run a travel website called The World on my Necklace which documents my own travels and includes helpful guides to places around the world as well as travel tips, travel budgets, things to do, and more. The website is still growing and is a labor of love that I have been working on for nine years.
In the past three years, I have been more seriously developing it as a business and I have started to reap the benefits of this. It has been a long path to start seeing the results of my work and I definitely felt like giving up at times. The biggest lesson I have learned is that persistence is important with a creative business because success often doesn’t come overnight – it certainly hasn’t for me.
I want the world to know that travel doesn’t have to be expensive or difficult and that you can create a lifestyle around it. This is what I showcase on my website.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I was lucky enough to have four of my best friends visit me in Denver from New Zealand (my birth country) and Australia for my wedding and I loved showing them around.
My favorite thing to do in Denver is to explore the different neighborhoods – there are so many fun neighborhoods with excellent dining options around Denver. My favorites are Berkeley, RiNo, Highlands Square, and Olde Town Arvada. I definitely always add at least a couple of food halls to my itineraries too because Denver has so many excellent choices – Stanley Marketplace and Denver Central Market are two of my faves.
Brewery-hopping would definitely be on any itinerary for me. I love FlyteCo, Denver Beer Company, Little Machine Beer, Ratio Beerworks, Great Divide Brewing Co, and Zuni Street Brewing Company.
A must-visit for anyone visiting me in Denver is Golden – I love that little mountain town and it is where I got married. A day in Golden would include a hike – Windy Saddle to Lookout Mountain is a favorite, checking out the shops on the cute Main Street, some brewery hopping – New Terrain and Golden City Brewing are my favorites, and dinner at Sherpa House or The Golden Mill.
I’d fill in more days biking the Cherry Creek Trail, dining on Larimer Square, having breakfast at Snooze, and spending a few hours at Meow Wolf.
And of course you can’t explore Denver without seeing a show at Red Rocks or visiting during the day to do a hike and visit the Colorado Music Hall of Fame.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I have been very lucky to have supportive friends and family, particularly my Mum Barbara who reads everything I post and comments often.
