We had the good fortune of connecting with Katie Langley and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Katie, other than deciding to work for yourself, what was the single most important decision you made that contributed to your success?
I really credit my success as a photographer to all the other artists that have helped and taught me along the way throughout my education. I got a degree in Film/Video Production as well as Fine Art and I credit a lot of my aesthetic and process to my work as a student. Having teachers that were also working artists was invaluable.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I was inspired as an artist by the film director Michel Gondry early on. He is such an amazing director and accomplishes so many creative artistic effects “in camera” with the use of literal smoke and mirrors and other camera tricks. I was always very intrigued on how to capture various in camera effects after that and it has become a large part of my work. Other inspirations are Dada artists that use the idea of “chance” as a way to control the final outcome of their work. Some of the in camera effects and tricks I use don’t always work how I anticipated but it’s always a thrill to see something unexpected as the result.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I think I would definitely take a trip to visit some amazing alpine lakes in Rocky Mountain National Park. I’d take them out to Silver Plume to have some cocktails at Bread Bar and hopefully catch a live acoustic show. We would also have to go on a craft beer tour as well as a museum tour. There are so many awesome Denver art museums like the Kirkland Museum of Fine and Decorative Art and the Museum of Contemporary Art. Also I’d take them on a shopping spree at ReCreative Denver, one of my favorite local nonprofits.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I loved my time as a student at the Colorado Film School and Metro State University, I truly learned so much from other student artists and teachers. I also love working with Head Room Sessions in Denver now to be able to connect with the art community and meet local musicians. Lastly my husband Ted has always been my biggest supporter and even my photography assistant, he’s the best at making my subjects laugh organically.
