We had the good fortune of connecting with Katy Spiller and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Katy, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
During the pandemic, it was apparent to me that children needed some human interaction in their learning. Parents sought out safe opportunities for their children that existed outside of a screen. When the school at which I was teaching shut down during the pandemic (and never did reopen) I made the decision to bring my teaching to the child by providing a mobile classroom and tutoring service.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Over the course of my career, I have been honored to work with children in many different settings. These include a preschool in Flagstaff, Arizona, a Headstart classroom in Brunswick, Maine, a Headstart classroom in Brady, Texas, a Texas, public school in Marathon, Texas, a private and individualized school in Fort Collins, Colorado, a Montessori, Children’s House in Fort Collins, Colorado, and a public elementary school in Wellington, Colorado. I feel that the diversity of these teaching experiences has benefited my career and in turn benefited the children I teach. Being able to utilize a multitude of methods and materials allows me to reach more children. The Montessori philosophy places great emphasis on the “prepared environment. “ I am so thankful that I have learned about the importance of preparing an environment that is inviting, nurturing, safe, and fun for children.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would be sure to take a friend to Boulder for the Dushanbe Tea House. I would make a point to spend a couple days up in Steamboat and take them to Strawberry Hot Springs. A bike ride on the Poudre Trail into old town Fort Collins would be a must – perhaps a visit to the museum of contemporary art, and a visit to Trimble court gallery, followed by dinner at Coopersmith’s. Hopefully there would be good music up at Mishawaka to spend the night enjoying. I love going up to the museums in Cheyenne. And we would have to go to Lory State Park to hike up to Arthur’s Rock. We would also have to hit a session of yoga at the Old Town yoga studio.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to dedicate my shout out to my former boss and mentor Mary Crosby. Without her loving support, and gifting of materials, I would have never been able to embrace the art of Montessori teaching.
