Today we’re excited to be connecting with Kayla Derengowski again. If you haven’t already, we suggest you check out our prior conversation with them here.

Kayla, thanks for joining us again. Just to level set a bit for folks who may have missed our last interview together, can you briefly introduce yourself?
Hey there, i’m Kayla! I own a luxury beauty studio located in Colorado Springs called The Colour Mill. We provide high end color and extension services. Our vision is to create a sanctuary where hairstylists are empowered to thrive creatively, individually, and financially, while redefining self care for our clients. We are a salon that celebrates individuality, creativity, and empowering others to feel their best…..and look it too!

I started my journey into the hair industry in 2015 working from chain salons, to high end salons. I realized that most salon culture was corrupt and negative, and it needed to change. I decided in 2020, to make it my mission to start changing the narrative…and the industry as a whole. So I opened my own suite and have been expanding ever since! Now I am in a position to help other stylists achieve the same things I did, in an environment that is supportive and healthy,

Awesome, so we reached out because we wanted to hear all about what you have been up to since we last connected.
After 5 years of growing, obtaining more knowledge, and working on my stats as a business owner, I finally decided to start expanding and helping others do the same. I have developed an amazing assistant program with the help of my own mentors- where stylists that are serious about growing their technical and professional skills can come and be supported in their journey. I am on my way to opening a “teaching salon”, where each stylist that graduates the program, can then start building their own clientele and I can help them be as successful as I was….but with more support! After that, they eventually do the same with their own assistant! It’s really a beautiful thing to help the younger generation of stylists not have to go through all the hardships we “seasoned” stylists went through. Being in an environment where we all grow together and help each other thrive has been a dream of mine for a long time,,,and it’s happening! I’m so excited for this next chapter in my career and to be able help others along their own journey to success!

We have now arrived at one of our favorite parts of the interview – the lightning round. We’ll ask you a few quick questions to give us all some fun insights about you.

Favorite TV Show: The Office is the best show that was ever created and I will die on that hill.

Sweet or Savory: Savory all the way!

Mountains or Beach: Mountains all the way, but the beach is nice in moderation.

Favorite Sport (to watch): I’m a total football girl, all the way- GO PACK GO!

As a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up: I actually was a competitive hip hop dancer when I was young (10-19). I really wanted to become a professional dancer, but I’m happy I ended up owning a business where I can help others!

French Fries or Onion Rings: French fries will always be superior.

Favorite Cartoon growing up: Avatar the Last Air Bender or Spongebob

Favorite Childhood movie: Titanic

What do you want people to remember about you and your brand? What are some of things that you feel are most important, unique, special, etc?
When everything is said and done, I’d really like The Colour Mill to be remembered as a safe space. For our clients- the place where the magic happened, where confidence was created, where they felt empowered. I want them to remember how taken care of they felt and how much we appreciated every single one of them for their support. Also, the place where they could come to experience judgement-free conversations and feel secure enough to unwind. For our employees- I hope I am remembered for being the person they could rely on, the person who celebrated their individuality while also teaching them the valuable lessons they needed to be successful. I want to be the mentor they always think about and appreciate when they look back on their journey- for the good and bad. The one who aided in their confidence and made them feel like they could tackle anything. Overall, I want to make a positive impact on everyone my business comes in contact with.
