We had the good fortune of connecting with Kaylie Kempsell and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kaylie, what do you attribute your success to?
Customer service is key! Each photography session is completely customized to that particular client, and I spend time before every session talking to families to find out what they’re envisioning. At the start of my business my focus was on simply taking and sending digital images, but I soon realized that this was a disservice to my clients. Those digital images would be hidden away on a USB somewhere, never to be seen again. These days, the focus of my business is creating artwork that can be passed down from generation to generation. I want my clients to enjoy their beautiful photos every day! I love working with people to find out what will work best for their family and their home (perhaps it’s a canvas, a framed print, an heirloom box, or an album). I’m so grateful that I’m able to provide beautiful heirlooms tailored for each family.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I think something that sets me apart from other photographers is my background as a NICU nurse. I love taking beautiful photos, but I also want to make sure that they’re done safely. Every baby is different and not every baby is comfortable in every pose. I want babies to look comfortable in their photos, but I also want them to BE comfortable. One of the biggest challenges with newborn photography is that it’s unpredictable. Babies don’t tend to take direction very well! Everything I do is based on a baby’s mood, comfort, eating schedule, diaper changes, etc. The sessions are never rushed, and I think that shows in the resulting photographs.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I love finding little places that are a bit off-the-rader. Small, local businesses have so much more personality! Here in Westminster, I enjoy getting a chai tea at Zoe’s Coffee or a French dip sandwich at Northside Tavern. Then, of course, we’d have to go for a drive in the mountains to enjoy the beautiful scenery!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’m incredibly grateful to my family for supporting me in everything I do. I was working in a career as a NICU nurse when I was diagnosed with Chronic Lyme Disease, and the treatment landed me on bedrest for 3.5 years. My family supported and cared for me through this extremely challenging time. As I started to feel healthier, I decided that 12-hour shifts just weren’t possible for me anymore and I began building my photography business. My family was by my side the entire time and so supportive of my goals and dreams!
