We had the good fortune of connecting with Kelley and Ric Tredwin and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kelley and Ric, what do you think makes you most happy? Why?
The old adage “money can’t buy happiness” is something we work with in our financial services practice. Some clients believe that more money will make them happy. Others, they believe that money is evil and the core source of their problems. But research shows that money does increase happiness. With one important caveat: when emotional well-being is present, then money increases happiness. When a person lacks emotional well-being, then no amount of money changes their situation. Basically, if you’re an unhappy person, money won’t make you happy, but if you are happy, then money makes you happier. This is good news.

We start conversations in our practice with “what are your financial and life dreams?” We spend an uncomfortable amount of time on this question. If we can support you in building a strong and healthy framework for a meaningful life, then saving, spending and investing has a strong and positive purpose. The motivation behind financial well-being is framed optimistically.

We talk with clients about how they spend or save their money. Spending money in ways that supports their values and builds meaning in their lives is an optimistic approach that supports healthy wealth. Healthy wealth is not about the mindset and the habits you develop around your wealth that help you feel like you have enough.

A lot of people focus on “getting rich” (or needing more) but they neglect to recognize how they “stay rich” or keep and enjoy the wealth they have. We see many people who make a very good living, but still feel poor and stressed that they are falling behind. We re-frame the approach to money and help clients move toward healthy wealth.

We have been married for 19 years and working together for ten years. During that time, we have struggled with what it means to be content, to be happy, what it means to have enough. We started to define healthy wealth for ourselves after we experienced a home fire in 2013. Seeing your belongings burned and then dozed into a dumpster really gives you perspective. We are both high achievers. We both have high standards for how we conduct business. But until that point, we mostly overlooked our own emotional and financial well-being. Now we hike. The last two years, we’ve complete two 100-mile trails in England and aim to keep long-distance hiking all over the world. This gives us perspective and helps us learn to live in the present moment. And honestly, as we are in middle age, it keeps our brains sharp and our bodies moving, and that alone provides a quality foundation for happiness.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?

• Seek to understand you every time you talk with us.

• Seek out solutions with you.
• Engage you in tax planning and estate planning as integral parts of your financial plan.
Financial advisor anxiety is a real thing, just like anxiety around going to the dentist. We want you to feel engaged and optimistic when you meet with us. We want money (and your investments) to be a tool to your happiness. Altalune means “over the moon” and we want you to feel that way after each interaction with us, your financial advisors.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Kelley is a Kansas City girl living in Albuquerque, and the closest place for football is Denver. So on a trip to watch the Chiefs chomp the Broncos, we love to share a meal at Tavernetta near Union Station, a favorite of ours.

Mostly though, we love outdoor adventures and being in the mountains, so a little further outside of the city. Our favorite places in Colorado include Sand Dunes National Monument and the area around Silverton, Ouray and Leadville. Mosquito Pass, Imogene Pass near Telluride and Pearl Pass near Aspen are old wagon, mining roads that we love to explore in our vintage Land Rover.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
We are firm believers in identifying new perspectives and insights to help us build our positive future. One perspective that we’ve relied upon for some time is the research at The Gottman Institute, which has been studying the ingredients of successful marriages for the last 30 years. Our Gottman Institute Marriage Coach, Dr. Heidi Sauder, who is in Denver, deserves a lot of credit for helping us re-frame difficult conversations in our marriage. Money is named as a primary reason for divorce, and our efforts with The Gottman Institute have helped us understand how to communicate in marriage and with our clients. Dr. Sauder has given us both new perspectives and conversation activities that are truly simple and life-changing.
