We had the good fortune of connecting with Kelsy Erickson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kelsy, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Early in motherhood, I was spending a ton of time capturing moments of my kids with my phone camera. Most of the photos weren’t great and I never felt like I captured what I saw. I realized that I wanted to understand the art and science of photography in order to capture our everyday moments with more sophistication.

I invested in a photography course and dug in. Instead of pulling out my phone, I grabbed my camera every chance I got. It may have been a bit much for this in my immediate family and close circle – I was taking pictures constantly. Over time, I realized that my hobby was becoming a passion of mine.

Formerly, I was a secondary math teacher. I love how mathematics shows up in all aspects of life. When I’m taking photos, there are so many patterns and ratios in nature that I see. In the science behind photography, you deal with tons of mathematical relationships when exploring different lens lengths and the parts of the exposure triangle. I guess the artistic/creative side of photography overlapped with the beauty of math for me.

After some time, I talked to many friends and acquaintances who wished that they were in more of the photos with their kids and families. My business idea formed when I knew that I wanted to support other parents by capturing them with their families. I also wanted to provide the service at a price point that would allow them to use me yearly.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Getting to know my clients has been absolutely crucial for my career as a photographer. In order to make them feel comfortable in front of a camera a rapport and understanding of their family is vital. Our interactions before and during photoshoots feed future bookings with them and referrals from them. There’s no greater compliment to receive than to hear from a new client that they came to hear about me through word of mouth from a former/current client.

I’m constantly inspired by the families and individuals I serve. While they only meet with me for a short time yearly, I love learning new details about them, watching their families grow through the years, and developing relationships. It’s so fun to show up to the rec center or a restaurant in town and run into clients, these interactions make our community feel tight knit.

My commitment to my clients mirrors my passion for photography.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Longmont and northern Colorado have so much to offer! My best friend and I would probably take our families on a morning hike on Anne U White Trail (Boulder) or biking at Valmont bike park (Boulder). We’d have a picnic lunch near Mcintosh Lake (Longmont) and then take the paddleboards out for a short ride. For dinner we would enjoy dinner at Longs Peak Pub and ice cream after at Sweet Cow (Longmont)

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Anna Tenne, photographer, has been a huge inspiration to me and my work. I absolutely loved her course and love the mentorship she provides. My husband, John, also encouraged me to pursue my passion!
