We had the good fortune of connecting with Ken Ferrall and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Ken, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I worked for many years at a company where I often felt frustrated by how hard I had to work just to keep up. It seemed that the more effort I put in, the more my workload would grow. Over time, several colleagues privately told me they thought I’d be better off working for myself. It took a while for me to seriously consider it, but eventually, I made the decision to go out on my own—and it was one of the best choices I’ve ever made.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Working for a company for many years gave me valuable insight into the inner workings of an organization and the ups and downs of the business world. It was an incredible learning experience—especially when it came to handling client issues and seeing how my role directly impacted the customer experience. Along the way, I made mental notes about what I would—and wouldn’t—do if I ever owned a business of my own.

Eventually, I was asked to step into a leadership position. It was both exciting and eye-opening. One of the first things I noticed was that some employees I had personal relationships with began to distance themselves once I became their supervisor. That was tough to navigate, but it taught me an important lesson: the need to clearly separate personal and professional relationships in the workplace.

That transition gave me the opportunity to grow as a leader, build essential skills, and learn how to navigate the complexities of managing both people and performance. One principle that’s guided me ever since is simple but powerful: treat each employee the way you would like to be treated. That mindset served me well, and I’m proud to say it helped create a culture where many employees chose to stay and grow with us for the long term.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
We live in the Castle Rock area, which is full of great restaurants and activities both in town and in the surrounding areas. When friends or family come to visit, we love taking them to places like Garden of the Gods in Colorado Springs—it’s always a favorite.

Philip S. Miller Park is another gem right here in Castle Rock. It’s a great spot to get some exercise, especially if you’re up for tackling the incline stairs. For those seeking a bit more adventure, the park also features several zip lines. On top of that, it has a well-designed concert venue that we’ve enjoyed attending. It’s truly a thoughtfully planned and versatile space for all kinds of activities.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I worked with a man named Ed Flynn many years ago. He was a kind, unassuming person who was always quick to offer praise and encouragement. Ed constantly pushed me to stretch myself professionally and to step outside of my comfort zone. I wasn’t always comfortable with that at the time, but his guidance played a big role in shaping the person I am today.
