We had the good fortune of connecting with Kendrick Cowdery and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kendrick, what’s the end goal, career-wise?
My end goal is to continue to evolve the process of creation. If you’re doing it right, the process of making art and creating new visual ideas is the end goal. While that may seem a bit lofty, it simply means that my goal is to continue making art, coming up with new ideas, working with individuals and communities, exploring new ways to express myself and keeping the visual impact of my work invigorating.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I loved my career as a High School Graphic Arts and Digital Media teacher. In my first years, there were no computers and everything we did was made the old fashioned way. Cut and paste weren’t computer commands and had to be done with scissors and paste. I began working with computers in the very early eighties and never looked back. It wasn’t always easy, but the rewards were great. I was motivated to see how computers could be used by creatives and my students were too. Eventually I retired and now in my second career as a visual artist, change is the only constant. Every piece I make whether a success or failure is a stepping stone.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Living in Colorado is fantastic. My advice to anyone coming to this area is to get out on that mountain! If you’re not inspired by everything around you, then you’re not trying very hard. Grab a micro brew, something to eat and then buy something from one of the local artists!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
The Manitou Art Center. The artistic community that has been growing at the Manitou Art Center has everything to do with my success. For example, The First Amendment Gallery has a continuing un-juried show that changes every six weeks or so. The work displayed comes from traditionally educated artists, non-traditional artists, and everything in between. Every new show has something that blows my mind and keeps my own perspective fresh. I also want to give a shoutout to my Instructors at Illinois State University who nurtured my attitudes.
