We had the good fortune of connecting with Kirsten Alexis and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kirsten Alexis, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
I’ve always believed that taking risks and getting outside our comfort zones are crucial to our personal growth. I was told from a young age that the biggest failure is not trying, and that has left a lasting impact on how I deal with risk today. I think taking risks is the only way we ever get to reach our goals, but they have to be safe and calculated.

Taking risks has led me to embrace failure. It has helped me be more confident and led me to opportunities I may have never had. I took a risk years ago by deciding to become a freelancer after I was laid off from a design job. I am currently a social media consultant and content creator, and take risks every day by reaching out to potential clients and people I want to collaborate with. This has led to many rejections, but it has also led to some incredible experiences, opportunities and connections. I have learned so much about what works, and what doesn’t. I have learned a lot about myself, including my strengths and weaknesses that I can improve on. I feel like I would have become stagnant in a job I was just comfortable in had I never taken risks to pursue higher job titles and opportunities. I learned that by just going for it and putting myself on the line led to one of two things. I either didn’t get the opportunity, and learned what I needed to improve on. Or, I got the opportunity. Either way, I won.

In my personal life, taking risks has led to so many experiences, friendships and personal development. Saying yes to things I wanted to do led me to becoming more confident and motivated to be the best version of myself.

Taking risks led to me becoming a licensed skydiver, content creator for adventure and travel companies, traveling the world, climbing mountains, skiing, getting my writing published, and more. It opened so many doors, and allowed me to dream even bigger.

When we get rid of our fear of failure and limiting beliefs, we allow ourselves to really experience life. We allow ourselves to pursue our passions and grow into our authentic selves.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I have always been interested in photography, and feel absolutely blessed that I can have my passion be part of my career. I actually went to UCLA for arts and media, and specialized in photography and painting. I lived for the days when I could take what I learned in the classroom and apply the skills in the outdoors. One of my favorite spots during this time was Joshua Tree. I loved capturing the desert landscapes, and exploring new spots each time I went.

I also found a lot of mental healing through exploring and being outdoors, Bringing my camera along with me allowed me to be creative, and share my story.

I actually started posting my photos and stories on social media to keep in touch with family and friends when I started traveling after college. I was addicted to travel, and wanted to see it all. Being able to share my experiences and stories allowed me to share in real time what I was doing, and at the same time see what they were doing back home. I then started to network with other travelers, and became even more inspired to travel, connect with others and share posts to hopefully one day make it profitable.

There were, and still are, many challenges. But that’s what makes it fun. It keeps it interesting. If it were easy, it would be boring and predictable.

I’ve learned that I’m always learning. There is no shortage of skills to improve on. I’ve also learned how connected, and alike, we truly are. By sharing our stories and experiences we can find similarities and relate to one another. We can inspire each other to live our dreams and make the world a better place. We can be the change we want to see if we use our strengths for good.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I absolutely love Denver. Every time I have visited this city has just been a blast. I would definitely take them to the art museum and botanical gardens. I also am a huge fan of just wandering around, so I would take them downtown and Larimer Square to check out the shops and restaurants.

Given we had enough time, I would also take them out of the city and into the famous Rockies. I’m an avid hiker and skier, so depending on the time of year we would head to the mountains and explore. I would most likely take them to Winter Park. It’s a great place to stay year-round, and is relatively close to the city. They have world-class skiing, and is close to some legendary 14,000 feet peaks that can be done as day hikes.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d love to give a shoutout to my family, friends and all of the incredible people I have met during my adventures and travels. Thank you for always inspiring me to be my best each and every day, and to never give up on my dreams.
