We had the good fortune of connecting with Kirsten Jensen and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kirsten, what do you attribute your success to?
Always keep learning. You are only as good as the things you know and your willingness to learn the things you don’t. I didn’t grow up ranching but I knew it’s what I wanted to do, so I had no choice but to learn the tools of the trade. Now I’m a first generation rancher and beyond proud to be one.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am a full time first generation rancher managing a private operation with my husband in Southern Montana. When I’m not taking part in ranch matters, I like the share about my journey into ranching through content creation for Instagram. I have enjoyed being able to fill my creative cup through photoshoots and social media management, while also being able to inspire other “crazy horse gals” along the way.
I can remember several years back when ranching was just something I wanted to be doing but only dreamed of the day I’d do it full time. I took courses, my friends in the industry and did everything I could to completely immerse myself in the agricultural world. I applied for jobs I wasn’t qualified for and got them because despite the lack of ranching on my resume, I knew it was what I wanted and needed to be doing.
Several states later and exposure to many types of operations, and here we are – living our dream.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would take my best friend up to Three Forks and then down through Ennis. There is incredible hiking down there, but along the way there are saddle shops, coffee shops and SO many good restaurants!
I just like to share the western culture that Montana is so rich with (not to mention all the great local coffee makers!)
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d like to dedicate my story to everyone that’s believed in me along the way – to those ranches that took a chance on me to manage their operations and do good by their animals and the land. I would not be where I am today without the experiences you provided me.
