We had the good fortune of connecting with Kisha Johnson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kisha, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I help women entrepreneurs build financially stable, sustainable businesses.

Statistics show that 80% of small businesses are going to fail within the first 3 years of opening. That is a tremendous amount of people not able to share their gifts in the world, simply because they lack knowledge on managing their finances, and setting foundational priorities in place. NO longer do we need to wait 3 years to pay ourselves first! That first sale should be celebrated, not just reinvested.

My heart is to see these women flourish. Not just in their finances, but in providing advisory coaching, mentoring, and guiding them to set themselves up to safely take risks in their business. My firm mentor our clients on the hiring process, on setting achievable goals, on boundaries in work / life balance, and paying themselves a salary before anyone else in the business gets paid. They are, after all the number ONE employee of the business. Without them, there IS no business.

What should our readers know about your business?
Your Numbers Nerd LLC is a small boutique bookkeeping firm who, on the surface provides compliance in accounting, payroll, sales tax and reporting for small businesses throughout Colorado, and in several other states.

The true heart of our business is to partner alongside other women entrepreneurs and help them achieve their long term goals. We dig deep into the heart of what drives them in their business, and map out goals for their future, so that they feel like they are able to manage their businesses and live their lives with balance.

As the owner of our firm, I have been providing compliance work in bookkeeping to non profits and for profits alike for the last 25 years, but always as an employee. I branched out several years ago to helping small business owners because I saw a need for advisory help – someone to coach and mentor these business owners to understand their numbers, and see where their business COULD go, and what they COULD achieve if they were a little organized, and had a system that worked for them.

Has it been easy? Oh no. At first, I was willing to take on just “any” client. I had a hard time discovering who our ideal client was, and how to find them so I could help them. I’ve made some mistakes in pricing our services, taking on the wrong clients, and trusting team members who were not willing to help our clients see the bigger picture through the lens of their finances. It’s been weekend work, long hours in the evenings as I worked a full time job and came home to support the clients at night. It’s been sacrificing vacations and family time as I learned how to position our business to operate carefully. Another challenge was figuring out our technology stack and keeping track of all the plates in the air – finding the right project software, all of these have been growing pains every business owner goes through.

Our team, Adrienne, Katrina and Emma are here to help. We vehemently believe in operating debt free, cash driven businesses.

We want you to succeed and reach that American dream! Whether its buying land in the country, putting your kids through college, earning extra cash to throw at getting out of debt, or paying for the wedding of your dreams, we want to see that become your reality. We pour our heart and soul into guiding our clients toward making the best decisions for their businesses.

We help our clients create, believe in and then achieve their dreams through their business pursuits.

We LOVE the American Entrepreneur!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
As a recovering New Yorker, I am in love with the slower pace life Colorado has to offer. From the scenery to the hiking, museums, and places to learn, after 8 years I can’t seem to get enough. When friends come to town, I always plan 2 or 3 days of activities. Day one we head north to Estes Park in the Rocky Mountains. We will drive up into the mountains and follow the 2 mile hike to Alberta Falls. Then head into Estes for food and shopping.

Day two, we head south to Pikes Peak, Bishop Castle, Garden of the Gods, and The Crystal Park Cantina – my favorite place in Manitou Springs for great Mexican food, and sitting on the little patio area.

Day three we head into Denver. There we will spend time visiting Little Man’s Ice Cream, wandering around downtown taking in the sites and views, we might hit a museum or two and finish off for dinner at 5280 Burgers, I highly recommend their cheeseburger eggrolls. SO Good!

I believe you just haven’t experienced Colorado if you don’t have a good burger or steak while you’re here!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There are several people who’ve played a large role in where I am today. A dear friend of mine, Kathleena Gill challenged me several years ago to find my passion and pursue it. That led me to digging deep into some career based books and reminded me of my lifelong work in bookkeeping. I launched Your Numbers Nerd, LLC in August 2018, and haven’t looked back.

Lisa Campbell of the Markham Group in Canada has been an incredible mentor as I learn to grow my business.

My mentor and friend Craig Hill, founder of Family Foundations, Int’l guided me to the right books and taught me the concept of providing and creating value for my clients – not just trading time for money.

My son, Tye Johnson – the biggest cheerleader a mom could ask for – making waves and creating a legacy in his own photography business, has never stopped encouraging me to take risks and dream bigger.

And finally, my mastermind group – Colorado Women in Business, run by Caty Winyard. An incredible tour de force of small business women who create a safe place to grow, challenge, vent and be held accountable to one another.
