We had the good fortune of connecting with Kodi Nottingham and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kodi, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
All of my experience working since being a teenager has led up until the moment of me starting my own businesses. Whether it was an after school/summer art teacher, working political campaigns, to eventually becoming a corporate sales trainer. I picked up important skills and strategies at each that eventually led my to flourish as a digital marketer. It was March of 2020 and we were all locked in our homes and I knew that I wanted something different for me and my family. After accepting a severance package due to a covid layoff, I spent a few months planning to start my own gig, which was a huge deal for our family as I am the sole provider. We started Sherwood Marketing and Consulting and a month later, we had sold all of our stuff and moved out of the country. For the next two years I would build my business while living abroad! My company allowed us the flexibility to live/travel abroad while still growing other peoples businesses. For years I had people ask me “can you just do this for me” and I used to tell them no because it was against my previous employer’s policy. Now, my whole business model was created around helping those who needed it. We would offer big business marketing strategies and resources at a small business price!

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Want to grow your business? We sure would! At Sherwood Marketing and Consulting our focus has always been to help people find their brand and tell their story to the right audience(s). More often than not the person behind the brand is the story and marketing is who we tell that story to. I was always really good at putting on a mask and being who I needed to be in politics or the corporate world. Often times that didn’t align with who I truly was as a person. When I started my business I focused on being genuine to a fault, no more masks, no more pretending to be something I’m not. I spoke truthfully and unapologetically to my audience. Because they’re so used to something inauthentic or plastic, seeing something real was eye opening. I focus on bringing those same strategies to my clients, with laser focus on what we’re saying, who we’re saying it to and why. If it wasn’t for my clients and allowing me to help them, I’m not sure where I would be. The challenge of meeting new clients, helping them find their voice and then the right people to share that with is something that drives me everyday. I love the challenge and puzzles they bring to me and allow us to work together to put it all together!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would like to take this opportunity to shoutout my wife, Nicole. She has been an amazing support during the startup of this business. We work through operating this business together and she is my business partner as well as my best friend.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
For me, I have always used what I called my “chubby charm” to win people over with my personality before selling them anything. I always found it easier to make a personal connection before fostering a professional one. If people worked with those that they know, like and trust, it was my focus to do just that. I read a book by Seth Godin called “Purple Cow” which essentially focused on standing out amongst the mundane. I took that idea and ran with it! I have always told people that my spirit animal is Chris Farley. I wasn’t doing your marketing from a van down by the river, but I did have the ideas to make you and your business stand out amongst a crowd.
