We had the good fortune of connecting with Krissy Wejebe and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Krissy, where are your from? We’d love to hear about how your background has played a role in who you are today?
I was born and raised in Key West Florida. With a father as a fisherman and a mother as a dolphin trainer my upbringing has everything to do with where I am now.
My father had a fishing show called Spanish Fly for 17 years. After he passed we started the Jose Wejebe Memorial Foundation.
I still live and breath the coastal lifestyle I was brought up in and raise my two boys just up the road from the house I grew up in.
I also am working on relaunching the Spanish Fly coastal lifestyle brand, currently licensing out my fathers old shows, and work as the ED for my fathers foundation.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I was working at Dolphin Research Center from 2009-2012. It’s the same place my mother worked as a dolphin trainer growing up. Working in the visual communications department is was my goal to eventually work with my father on his show (production side).
April 6 2012 he died in a plane crash. Shortly after we formed the Jose Wejebe Memorial Foundation.
After a lot of success tragedy struck again when my husband drowned in 2019 when I was 3 months pregnant with our second child.
Recently I’ve had 3 different brain surgeries and I’m on the mend diving back into work.
Was it easy to get into the professional field…yes, but personal circumstances has made it difficult for me to have the time to do so.
Now with daycare and no more surgeries the ball is rolling again!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I live in the Florida Keys so as long as they like the water there’s a lot to do.
Fishing the flats, offshore fishing, sandbar, dolphin research center, Aquarium Encounters, dinner at the square grouper, and a sunset booze cruise.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Both my mother and father
