We had the good fortune of connecting with Kristen Gearhart and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kristen, we’d love for you to start things off by telling us something about your industry that we and others not in the industry might be unaware of?
Probably the laws and ethics of private investigation. In movies, PIs are often doing illegal activities and tend to be kind of sleezy characters. In reality, we do actually obey the laws. And because we’re following the laws, we have to be very creative at times in order to get the information we’re seeking. The profession is very much characterized by both creative and analytical thinking. So, I guess I’d want people to know we’re very active and professional individuals.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My background is in math and computer science. That’s what I studied in college and graduate school, and I’ve taught those topics to high school and college students. The math and computer stuff comes up quite a bit in investigation, trying to find ways to optimize tasks, predict behavior, etc.. Studying math also taught me how to think analytically. The teaching part, well, that really helps with relating to clients and communicating my ideas more effectively.
Something I learned from teaching math is that many people are scared of math. So when I worked one on one with students, I always tried to be very patient and flexible. This translates directly to conducting interviews. A lot of folks are very intimidated when they come into an interview, so you really need to be patient and let them guide the interview. People are much more willing to open up when you’re receptive to that sort of thing.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
You really can’t go wrong by heading west towards the mountains in Colorado Springs. Great hiking spots abound. One of my favorite spots for walking and trail running is Stratton Open Space. There’s a reservoir there where only dogs are allowed to swim, and it’s just delightful.
Some of my favorite places to eat are Elephant Thai and Urban Tandoor. I also highly recommend Chiba Bar, a super cool cyberpunk izakaya downtown. And you can have the best cinnamon roll of your life at Sweet Elizabeth’s off Uintah.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d really like to shoutout all the wonderful female role models I’ve had throughout my life. My mother and my grandmothers, first and foremost. They taught me courage and strength, but they also taught me to find joy in the small things.
I also have to shoutout Dr. Jenny Dorrington and Dr. Elizabeth Gillaspy. Jenny and Elizabeth are amazing leaders. They both work really hard, but they have the biggest hearts. I would not be where I am without the opportunities they gave me and the belief they had in me.
