Meet Kristina McKean | Owner-The Elephant Project

We had the good fortune of connecting with Kristina McKean and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kristina, we’d love to start by asking you about lessons learned. Is there a lesson you can share with us?
I think it’s been really interesting that one person can really make a significant change. I also never realized that a lot of times behind these large organizations, there are sometimes only a couple people doing a lot of the work. Although it is not always ideal-I think the lesson is that one person can make a difference. I also think when you work really hard and believe in what you are doing, you can make a change. I think I would teach my children those two invaluable lessons-work hard and be passionate about what you are doing-the sky is the limit!

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I started my company-The Elephant Project because I wanted to create funds and awareness for elephants globally. I had a background in product development and design and wanted to create something to help give back. It started as a passion project and has become my full time job.
I think in today’s world, we all need to do something to make a difference. I have always been passionate about elephants and all animals. I first witnessed a baby elephant being abused in Thailand and realized I needed to help elephants. I started protesting circuses and signing petitions but wanted to do more. Thus, I started The Elephant Project. I also wanted to let my daughters know that one person can make a difference.
I think it’s always hard when you start a business. It’s very important to love what you do and be passionate about it. I have put countless hours into my business and love seeing it pay off. I have made a significant difference for elephants specifically in Thailand and Africa.
I work closely with Lek Chailert at The Elephant Nature Park in Thailand and Sheltrick Wildlife Trust in Kenya.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Probably the sanctuaries I work with in Africa and Asia-
