We had the good fortune of connecting with Kylie B. Peinado and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kylie B., what is the most important factor behind your success?
There are two things I feel are the most important factors behind my success as a small business. The first has to be, hands down, my loyal customers. The customers that tag me on every “looking for a photographer” post they see on Facebook, refer all their friends to me, leave me amazing reviews, and tag me in all of the photos I took for them when they post them on social media. Those customers that are my tribe, my people. I owe SO much to them for being my cheering section! The second would definitely have to be my willingness to be constantly learning and experimenting with what works and what doesn’t. I take classes and retake classes, I am a part of a bunch of Facebook groups for photographers, I live and breathe photography. I know that I can always improve, and I go looking for knowledge almost every single day.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I have definitely taken the long road to get to where I know what my passions are and what I want to do with them, and honestly it is still evolving and blossoming inside of me. I didn’t get into photography knowing that I would someday want to be a birth and family photographer. I have always been drawn to pregnancy and birth and babies, but it took me an embarrassingly long time to realize that is what I should be photographing! I started out taking pictures of anything and everything, and slowly started realizing that some sessions really set my soul on fire and I wanted to do more of THAT. There is nothing like being at a session that ignites the passion inside of you and reminds you why you love photography – it is an indescribable high.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
We would definitely have to get some comfort food and wine at Pinocchio’s Casual Italian in Frederick to start. Then we’d probably need to work it off by hiking around Chautauqua Park in Boulder, followed by people watching and shopping at the Pearl Street Mall. We would need to plan a casual day trip to The BeeHugger Farm with our toddlers to feed the animals and pick some sunflowers one day, and then go listen to live music and play outside at Wild Cider. We’d also need to take a weekend trip to Colorado Springs to walk around the Garden of the Gods park, The Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, and The Broadmoor Hotel. Another day we would drive up to our favorite escape – Estes Park. We’d walk around the Stanley Hotel and tell the kids ghost stories, and then walk through town and buy jewelry, taffy, and caramel apples before relaxing by the creek for awhile, and then ending the night in a cabin with a hot tub. BEST. WEEK. EVER.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
There are SO many people I would love to give a shoutout to right now! I think one person that I really need to honor right now is my husband. He has always been supportive and encourages me to pursue my dream of being a photographer. He has been the breadwinner for our family doing whatever he can to pay our bills while I grow my business and take classes and learn and grow, and he does it without a single complaint. He definitely wants to see me succeed! I would like to also give a shoutout to the Birth Becomes Her Virtual Retreat I attended (virtually) this summer, and to the Facebook group that continues to support and learn from each other even months after the retreat ended. Finally, I’d like to send a shoutout to Tavia Redburn and The Beauty In Birth Photography certification course I completed this year. I learned SO much and it really gave me the confidence to jump into my passions!
