We had the good fortune of connecting with Lane Anne Geurkink and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Lane Anne, what’s the most important lesson your business/career has taught you?
One of the most important lessons I’ve learned is to worry less about whether people will or won’t like my artwork. In the past, the quality of my work has suffered when I am in a rush to finish something or I am motivated by what others may think. It is good to have a few trusted peers and mentors to give feedback and critique, but outside of that I’ve learned I need to trust my gut when creating.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Over the past few years my work has evolved from acrylic based/abstract pieces into dye based/abstract embroidery pieces. A few years ago I began to add embroidery to my acrylic paintings and it felt like the start of something special. I still embroider over acrylic from time to time, but mainly switched over to working with dyes (like indigo) because it was easier to embroider over. I have also loved learning about dyes with textiles, natural and synthetic. I would say for the better part of a decade I have been experimenting with different mediums and techniques, but finally feel like I am home in this current abstract/dye/embroidery space. I am constantly inspired by the endless possibilities of these mediums.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would go to the Denver Botanical Gardens to walk around have a picnic. If it were summer time I would be sure to go to Jazz in the Park at City Park also. I love U.S. Thai in the Highlands and Fortune Wok to Table in Cherry Creek for takeout and I usually get wine and spirits at The Vineyard Wine Shop in Cherry Creek, all of this for a picnic somewhere. I love to go to Safta, Barolo Grill, or Fruition for dinner on special occasions. If there’s a concert or movie night happening I love going to Red Rocks too!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to dedicate my shoutout to one of my dearest friends and fellow artists, Marcy Cook. We meet in college and got our BFA’s together. Her encouragement and advice throughout my career has been invaluable.
