We had the good fortune of connecting with Laura Schmonsees and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Laura, maybe we can start at the very start – the idea – how did you come up with the idea for your business?
My partner and I wanted to create an athletic recovery tool unlike any available, that would combine all the best features into one tool. Our home grown Wave Tool project was initially created out of clay, then field tested to come up with a 3D, ergonomic massage, trigger point and muscle scraping tool that was effecrtive, portable, and affordable. Our physical Therapy clients loved it, so we decided to start a business!

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
We all know that athletic recovery and injury management is very important.  Many times there are things that can be done at home to aid in recovery. For instance, muscle scraping can be used for releasing scar tissue, relieving muscle tension or reducing facial restrictions that can lead to problems down the road.  Many people use a foam roller, however our products offer a more precise and effective way to help manage pain, improve tissue mobility and reduce the chance of injury.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Boulder has so many great places. I would take them to Chautauqua to scramble in the flat irons, enjoy some delicious food on Pearl Street, and explore the climbing all around Boulder.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My father was paralyzed in a skiing accident when I was 10. His perseverance through adversity was incredibly inspirational to me as I grew up. As an adult this has helped me to have the courage to try even against odds. For example, I became one of the first female certified Mountain guides in the US, went back to PT school in my 30’s, and believed I could start a business after inventing the Wave Tool.
