Meet Laura Smith | Birthkeeper & Postpartum Doula for Mothers of Gaia Birthkeeping

We had the good fortune of connecting with Laura Smith and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Laura, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
The most important factor behind the success of my business is my deep trust in women and their intuition. As a birthkeeper and doula, it is my duty to trust women and their ability to birth their babies. Having a woman that supports your choices in the birth space and believes in you, is crucial to the way in which she can show up for you.

What should our readers know about your business?
I strongly believe that how we are born affects our relationships of trust with both our bodies and Mother Earth. To heal the Earth we must first heal birth. That’s why I’ve created Mothers of Gaia Birthkeeping. A business with loving intention and a purpose to bring women’s liberation through reconnecting, grounding, and trusting our bodies through the journey of womanhood, so that we can take that newfound intuition and heal the relationships, communities and environments around us.
Mothers of Gaia Birthkeeping offers services in home birth doula support, postpartum doula support, and fertility awareness education.
What sets me apart from other doulas in Colorado is that I specifically support women who are choosing to birth at home.
Starting my business has not been an easy process, but with the help of friends and family spreading the word, I have been able to serve women in birth all over the front range this last year. I’ve learned that it takes dedication and a commitment to furthering my education in birth so that I can best support women through this huge milestone in their lives.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my friend was visiting Colorado, I would take them to Nederland for a beautiful hike in the James Peak Wilderness! Afterwards we would head to Crosscut Pizza and grab a drink.
The next day I would take them to Rocky Mountain National Park in hopes that we can see some elk!
The mountain views and wildlife is what makes Colorado a really special place to me.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to thank my dear teacher, Whapio Bartlett of The Matrona. Whapio is a dedicated midwife with over 40 years experience of attending births, and 20 years running her midwifery school. She taught me the importance of trusting women, trusting the birth process, and trusting our own intuition when working with women.
