We had the good fortune of connecting with Leighton Smith and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Leighton, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Whew, risk taking… I have taken some risks in my life and career, but none quite like one I just embarked on. I’ve been self-employed for 5 years now and I have a golf coaching business. I’ve always had low overhead though, which has been my way to mitigate risk. Not anymore though! I just signed a commercial lease on a warehouse in the heart of Colorado Springs and Im bringing a vision (and need for the community) to life. When it comes to finances I always play things safe. I’m not big into debt and fancy things. But I just took out a huge SBA loan to buy fancy golf technology and create an awesome spot for golfers in Colorado to come dial. This whole process has pushed my way out of my comfort zone. I’ve felt quiet confidence about the “leap” because I’ve been stewing over it for a while and I had support from my family and friends. I tried to seek as much wisdom as possible and in the process, I gained confidence in my vision. I feel so excited. Most days Im super overwhelmed, but I know that’s normal.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
There are nearly 28,000 golf professionals in the USA. I do believe I am very different from the vast majority. I think this because I am highly relational and I have a unique process for goal setting and plan creating. This gets people excited to improve their golf games. Additionally, I started Tribe Golf because “Tribe” means a group of people moving in a common direction. That common direction is; improvement, being social, having fun, learning, beating your friends etc. I’ve learned that it’s not about me, or my approach. I am just the guide in my clients Stories. I help them find direction and confidence and give them a plan to follow. I want the world to know that Tribe Golf isn’t just about getting a golf lesson. It’s about reaching your full potential and having fun while doing it!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My wife Ashley is the best. She has been with me since day 1 and is a dream builder with me. My brother Cameron is an Entrepreneur and #1 on my oh sh!t speed dial. My two other brothers Jordan and Blake as well as my parents have my back and its awesome. I have some great friends and the best clients in the world. I could NEVER do this alone and consider myself super blessed to be able to do what I do.
