We had the good fortune of connecting with Leslie Herrmann and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Leslie, as a parent, what do you feel is the most meaningful thing you’ve done for them?
Becoming a parent is probably the most difficult transition I’ve undergone. From a tough pregnancy, to crippling PPA, to completely changing my sense of self – having kids was the catalyst for starting to work for myself. The best thing I can do for both my kids is try to be as available as possible. From re-organizing the way that I approach work to addressing my mental health, by being there I’m able to support them as they undergo the tough work of growing up.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I love crafting jewelry that holds deep personal meaning for the wearer. The rocks and earth elements we collect are steeped in memories and stories, and I am honored when people entrust me with these pieces to transform them into timeless keepsakes.

A significant benefit of creating custom, made-to-order jewelry is its lower environmental impact. By focusing on one-of-a-kind pieces, we eliminate the need to mass-produce and risk unsold inventory. Furthermore, I am committed to minimizing our footprint by using only plastic-free packaging.

The journey to starting and growing this business was born out of personal necessity after I became a parent. Dealing with Postpartum Anxiety made leaving the house challenging, leading me to leave my previous career. While it has been a difficult path, requiring therapy to manage anxiety, I still use my production management skills—now for my own venture.

I’m enthusiastic about the continued growth of Waystone. The flexibility of setting my own hours has been vital, allowing me to prioritize my mental health and be fully present for my children. And, as a bonus, I get to work with so many incredible rocks every day!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
A favorite destination I often share with friends is the Denver Botanic Gardens. I love the natural beauty and tranquility there; it’s a perfect place for me to relax while the kids enjoy a bit of freedom.

Another regular stop is Stanley Marketplace. It’s a hub of local food and has something for everyone—plus a playground! I’d love to see my jewelry featured in one of the shops there someday. Are you noticing a trend? Anywhere the kids can roam is a plus!

As proud state park pass holders, we love getting outside. My top two state parks are Golden Gate Canyon and Castlewood Canyon State Parks. Both are “leave no trace” areas, so while I don’t collect rocks, I enjoy the hiking.

For actual rock collecting, I head to the Jefferson County Parks. They all offer lovely hikes and are very easy to access.

Finally, I am a huge supporter of shopping small. If there’s an outdoor market, you can bet I’ll be there, often with friends in tow, chatting with other artists about their current projects.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My husband. He also had to change to support me in a difficult time and we have now found a rhythm of work where one of us is able to work and one will have the kids. We were never able to afford childcare, so it has always been a juggling act. There is so much to do in running a household and he has grown so much in being able to take on some of the unpaid labor of parenting. When I had my busiest season yet, he solo parented during the day during winter break and worked at night so I could put in long hours at the studio. Without him, I wouldn’t have grown Waystone to where it is today.
