We had the good fortune of connecting with Lexi Spadi and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lexi, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I honestly never thought that I would start my own business. I grew up thinking that I would do things the “traditional” way. I would graduate from high school, follow through with a degree program at a university, and start my career in that chosen field. I did that. I entered the workforce at the bottom of the totem pole with the expectation that I would spend my career working my way up until I was in my “dream position”. I spent almost five years doing what I felt I had to do and being miserable about 80% of the time. I couldn’t imagine spending the rest of my life going through the same motions, answering the same mundane questions day in and day out. I took (what I thought) was the biggest risk of my life and quit my job, moved out of my home state, and started a new path. I found myself closer to my passion, but still working for others and feeling stifled by the limits it placed on me. I always thought that starting a business was for someone else. Someone with a BIG idea. Someone with an undeniable purpose. Not me. However, I finally reached the point in my life where I realized that life is all about risk. Others are doing it, so WHY NOT me? I found the belief in myself and my product and talents and took the plunge. I saw the potential to make others happy by doing something that I thought was only a hobby. How could it get any better?! All that being said, I didn’t have much of a thought process, I had an army of support and extra time one evening.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’ve always struggled to make art just for myself, just because. I find that I create my best work when it’s for someone else. When someone comes to me with a simple, wild, abstract, personal, whatever it is idea and I get to take that idea, that information, and make it into a physical form, that’s what brings me joy in art. And what makes that art even better is that it’s edible and delicious! Celebrations have always had a sentimental place in my heart and being able to be a part of so many celebrations through my art is more than I can ask for. It hasn’t been easy, I never thought anyone would buy into this idea. I didn’t go to culinary school, I didn’t go to art school, I just did this on a whim four months ago. My biggest challenge I had to face, and continue to face, is myself and self doubt. I’m still surprised with every order that comes in, still in awe at the positive feedback I receive. I’ve learned that you can’t wait until you’re not scared to do something. Sometimes, most of the time, you have to do it afraid anyways because life is so worth it on the other side of that fear.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I am a Colorado native, but I am still fairly new to the Roaring Fork Valley. That being said, this little town of mine has already made a big impression. Glenwood Springs is of course known for the natural hot springs, Iron Mountain being a personal favorite. Depending on the time of year, there are so many things to do. Ming’s Asian Restaurant has an unbeatable beef lo mein and Grind crafts some killer adult milkshakes! Two Rivers park is a great place to go biking, hop on a raft, join a pickup game of volleyball, walk your dog, etc. However, you can find great hiking just about anywhere outside your front door!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to dedicate my shoutout to my mom. She has always expressed a belief in me that I never thought I would share with her. She has pushed my limits, opened my mind, eased my fears, and filled my life with so much love and support in all that I do. The gratitude that I feel for her is boundless.
