We had the good fortune of connecting with Lillian Söderman and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lillian, how do you think about risk?
Taking risks has played a huge role in my life and career. I am constantly challenging myself to face my fears. I believe that courage is a muscle that needs constant exercise or else it begins to atrophy. As an example, I recently became certified as a free diver in hopes it might help me to overcome my fear of water. I go to the places that scare me because it’s often my edge of growth. My willingness to stay curious in the discomfort has been central to my pursuit of music. It’s a vulnerable thing to sing your journal entries to crowds of strangers. Even when I get scared or when I’m being hard on myself, I go back to the free diving moments of my life and remind myself to stay and stay open.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am a singer songwriter based in Denver, Colorado, but quite often on a the road. My music comes from the deepest place I know. I often times feel as though something else writes through me. I aspire to be what many of my song lyrics convey. I’m incredibly proud of my latest solo album. I got to used to hiding behind a band. I wanted this album to be raw and vulnerable. No hiding. It’s been one of the most challenging records to play live, but I’ve grown so much because of my willingness to keep singing through the discomfort.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
We’d grab coffee at Pablo’s and then head to play some volleyball at Wash Park. The next day, I’d schlep her to my favorite Platte River spot near Pine, Colorado and get some good nature time in. We’d come back that evening and head straight to Sunday Vinyl to hear good tunes and drink amazing natural wine. We’d cap off the amazing trip with a show at Red Rock’s Amphitheater.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would not be here without the constant love and support of my older brother, Arne. He’s the one that first handed me a book on Buddhism, which changed the course of my life. I am always learning from his love of adventure, his ever-changing hobbies, and his incredible parenting. I’m the luckiest sister and aunt!
