We had the good fortune of connecting with Linda McConaughy and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Linda, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
When I retired from teaching art, I wanted to dedicate my time and energy to making art. I started a small business making functional objects in a variety of media (ceramic, recycled plastic, fibers) to help support my other art making ventures. I had started entering my work in a lot of juried shows — entry fees and shipping are expensive and not typically offset by gallery sales. Having a place to sell artful but functional items helped offset the cost of promoting my work.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I spent 30 years as an art educator and art program supervisor in a large east coast school district. I left that job to move back to my hometown, care for my aging mother and spend time on my own practice as an artist. I work hard to promote my work through my website, social media, exhibitions, and teaching. I have expanded my studio to include separate spaces for carpentry, fibers, and painting/mixed media.
The biggest challenge for me is promoting my work. I would rather make art than spend hours on the computer updating my website, applying for exhibits and residencies, and posting on social media. However, these things are increasingly necessary for me if I want opportunities to exhibit my work and develop a strong practice.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Cleveland has a great art community. American Greetings is headquartered here — they employ a lot of artists and designers. There are all sorts of local art organizations, studios, galleries, and great museums. The Cleveland Museum of Art is a great place to visit, and it’s located in the beautiful University Circle neighborhood. 78th Street Studios, the Twist Drill building studios, Waterloo Arts District are all worth a visit.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Liz Maugins is a tireless promoter of the arts and artists in the Cleveland area. She invited me to participate in my first group show, and has helped me connect with other artists in the area.
