We had the good fortune of connecting with Lindsey Gerstner and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Lindsey, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Starting my career as a professional photographer was a huge leap of faith. I never would have taken the risk in starting a career I was not familiar with if it weren’t for my husband believing in me. My husband lost his job not long after Covid-19 hit, and that really rocked our families foundation. That was such a scary and trying time for our family, but those struggles are what really helped me transition into the person I was meant to be.

“The wings of transformation are born of patience and struggle.” – Janet S. Dickens

My very first photoshoot was completely free, as I was just trying to find anybody who would be willing to let me attempt to use my camera and capture their story. I nearly canceled that first session because I was so sick with nerves and had so much doubt in myself. But, I persevered and took that risk on myself and struggled so much through that first session but I walked away learning so much. I continued to take risks, and offer my services to anyone who would let me capture them, and each session I continued to learn through trial and error and that was by far the best way for me to grow. Being a creative and choosing to take risks is a crucial relationship. Without the risk, there would be no struggle, and without that struggle nothing extraordinary would come. I love to challenge myself as well as my clients in any way possible so that I can capture something unique that tells their story, and so I can be a part of something to be proud of.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am constantly working on bettering myself as a photographer. Every session I have, I am continually trying to view it as constructively as I can so I can continue to grow as a photographer. If I am not busy with a photoshoot or editing, I am trying to grow my online presence.  There is such a challenge in this industry to stand out from the crowd as a photographer. With social media as prevalent as it is, there is always the challenge of, “how will this grab people’s attention?” There is constantly a struggle to conform and try to present this aesthetically pleasing grid on Instagram, while trying to keep in mind that photography is an art, and that I want to stand out with my style of photography individually. I have really been finding joy in capturing weddings. There is something so magical about being there to capture every detail and all the small moments on such a monumental day.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Whenever a friend comes to visit, one of the first places I love to take them is Roxborough State Park. It is such a breathtaking location with jaw dropping views. Red Rocks concerts are always a must as there is no experience like live music out in nature. Anytime we are looking for a tasty place to eat, Dos Santos in downtown Castle Rock, is a fantastic place to grab some cocktails and exceptional tacos.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would have never even thought about becoming a photographer if I hadn’t met my dear friend, and professional photographer, Montgomery in Nashville, TN. While we were living in Nashville, Montgomery photographed my family several times, and I was amazed that she could deliver such beautiful images even though it felt like my kids were being wild during the session. She was my main inspiration in wanting to get into photography. I knew I could absolutely help families, and couples have the best time while I capture all the small moments that tell their story. I, of course, would have never made the step into photography if it weren’t for my husband’s belief in me. He is the one who planted this idea in my head and even bought me my first camera. He has always shown me such amazing support and is constantly there giving me words of encouragement. My family has also always had my back the whole way, and are always supporting me in any way that they can. Just knowing I have such an amazing support system, really helps me continue on this amazing road as a photographer.
