We had the good fortune of connecting with Lindsey Scot Ernst and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Lindsey Scot, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
When I started my business in 2014, my mindset was that there was no other option. I had been taking custom work during my last year of school and as it began to pick up, the possibility of going full time felt more and more real. After I graduated, I decided to quit my job as a server in Downtown Denver and work in my studio. Working for yourself is not an easy job, nor does it pay well in the beginning, but the flexibility, the opportunity to be creative everyday and the people you get to meet and create for make the hard days and long nights incredibly worth it.

I have been in many spaces where Jewelry is not considered a fine art form due to it’s traditional past, but I am here to say, Jewlery is not only an art form, it is one of the most ancient forms of art there is. The art of metal smithing is not for the faint of heart. From melting down precious metals to hammering it flat, rolling it into sheet and cutting it with a 1mm saw blade, the arms and hands of a jeweler never get a break. Of course, there are so many ways to make jewelry, that is what makes it so fascinating, but the way I’ve described is how I prefer to create.

The LSE Studio is mindful about its impact on the planet. We use re-refined metals, meaning they have been melted and refined from previously used, scrap metal. This avoids having to mine new material from the Earth, making it far more sustainable. We also hand select gemstones rather than buying in bulk. This cost more for us in the long run, but it keeps from over consuming and we find that to be really important.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Living in a mountain town, life is a little different than the city. We are located on the Arkansas River and sit at the foothills of the Sangre De Cristo and Sawatch Mountain Range, so depending on the season we may go white water rafting (or just a slow cruise down the river), snowboarding, hiking, biking, take a walk downtown to shop and grab a coffee at Howl Mercantile and enjoy dinner and wine at my favorite roof top patio at The Biker and The Baker.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Gosh, where to begin? I was first encouraged by my parents to be an artist. They have been my biggest mentors in the world of the arts. I grew up going and being a part of art and fashion shows and I spent many evenings at the kitchen table making beads and sculptures out of sculpy clay with my dad. As I grew, I was lucky to have teachers and mentors such as master goldsmith Randy Burns to encourage my growth with both my creative and business sides. And of course my clients. They have not only supported my work, they have pushed me to be a better artist.
