We had the good fortune of connecting with Lisa Goodman and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Lisa, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
Work-life balance has always been a challenge for me. Combining workaholism with entrepreneurship is tricky! My business is as much a home to me as my home. In the early days of my business, I would find myself at my practice on evenings and weekends to work on so many things that needed my attention. Now, I can’t remember what those things were. What I have realized over the last several years, is that when you are highly ambitious and driven, there will always be work to do. It never stops. So you absolutely must employ boundaries to your time. I no longer work at night and I very rarely pull my laptop out on the weekends. Spending time with my family and relaxing have become a priority, and in return my work time has become much more productive.

What should our readers know about your business?
I started Washington Park Chiropractic in 2006 weeks after graduating with my professional degree. There were no chiropractic practices that were doing what I envisioned: become integrated in the community, be available, offer elite, specialized sports, prenatal and pediatric care to active, healthy people of Denver. It was always important that patients be heavily involved in their own health care, and so many chiropractic practices operated under formulas of huge pre-payment packages and a one-size-fits-all approach. Wash Park Chiro needed to stand apart from that crowd. My goal was and still is to offer choices, educate people and develop relationships that would extend to their families, friends, neighbors, co-workers and gym buddies. I figured, if a patient got out of pain at Wash Park Chiro, they would tell others! And they have. We have a fantastic community and it makes my day when friends run into each other in our lobby.

Business-wise, we have had many challenges and triumphs. Starting from a one-woman practice and growing one employee at a time to now 12 employees has created some challenges of processes and scaling. The key is to have a great team where each part of it can be relied on and is an equal contributor to the whole. Communication and trust are my keys to keeping the growing pains at bay.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Hopefully the friend is a golfer! There is no better view in the city than the City Park golf course. We’d play around of golf then enjoy lunch overlooking the city. I’ve even taken non-golfers there just for the food – it is delicious. I also love live sports, so ideally we’d catch a Nuggets or Rockies game. Rockies games are so fun (despite the team’s recent record) as Coors Fields offers great food and views and the whole area around McGregor square is lively and fun. My favorite spot for a margarita and beachy Mexican food is Perdita in Wash Park. No visit would be complete without a walk around Wash Park with my dog, Ozzie.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My family has always supported my ambition and they are my biggest cheerleaders! I could not make as big of an impact on the community of Denver and Wash Park without them.
