We had the good fortune of connecting with Liz Black and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Liz, can you share the most important lesson you’ve learned over the course of your career?
There’s a quote out there that I’m not sure who to attribute to but it says something to the effect of “do the next right thing”. I think sometimes we think that great business ideas come to individuals fully formed and ready to execute. But in working for an incredible arts non-profit for a decade I realize that so much of the time, you just continue doing good work that aligns to your mission and changing and evolving with the current climate. Good ideas are certainly a part of it but also, it’s just leaning into the process, trying new things out, and seeing what works.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I just feel so incredibly lucky to be engaged in the work of building an arts district and growing an artistic movement for a decade. I have so much privilege to be able to be in this line of work. It IS easy in the sense that I have work-life balance, flexibility in my work schedule, and the ability to do work that is intellectually, socially, and energetically affirming. So many people globally will never have access to this – – – so yes, the work is easy. What I would want people to know about our arts district, 40 West Arts, is that community and authenticity are truly at the heart of everything we do. This organization makes mistakes, tries out things that don’t always work, etc. but at the end of the day it is so pure. I am proud to work for an organization that puts community, engagement, and accessibility to the arts at the cornerstone of everything we do.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Breakfast – Davie’s Chuck Wagon Diner
This diner was shipped from New Jersey and has been open since 1957. It is listed on the national registry of historic places. The vibe is so cute.

Coffee – Mint & Serif Coffeeshop
Local, cute, filled with art, wall of antique telephones, what else can I say.

Beer – WestFax Brewing Company
Local, fun flavors, cool patio right next to Casa Bonita and a rotating food truck schedule

Arts – 40 West Arts District!
Tons of local galleries, studios, creative businesses and more. Always open on the First Friday of every month from 5-9pm but the HUB Building (which houses 7 galleries and creative businesses) is open every Friday evening and Saturday-Sunday afternoons

Local Shops – Rocky Mountain Punk Nature and Oddities
Cool local shop where plants, art, nature and music meet

Local Shops – Red Herring Art & Supply
Cool, unique art supplies, funky gifts, stickers, magnets and more

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My mentor and colleague Bill Marino founded the arts district (alongside partners) over a decade ago. His dedication to this organization, work ethic, and passion are truly unmatched. It has been a pleasure to build the arts district alongside him and to learn and grow as an individual through trying to keep up!
