We had the good fortune of connecting with Liz Sanders and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Liz, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
After spending years working for other people, it was time for a change. I always dreamed of opening my own bookstore one day. The time was right to start the process. I wanted to create something unique. I wanted to create a haven for booknerds and introverts who want to go out but not be overwhelmed by noise and large crowds. This vision culminated in Blurred Words – a used bookstore with a speakeasy style bar.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Blurred Words is unlike any bookstore or bar I’ve ever visited. And that’s the point. It’s a bookstore and a bar where people can read, study, or hang out. The traditional bar scene is loud and crowded. Blurred Words offers a quiet tranquil alternative striking awe into its visitors. I’m frequently told how a place like Blurred Words is needed in the community.
Building a business isn’t easy. It’s an ongoing challenge. Finances are by the far the biggest challenge. Every month, I worry about expenses and how long we’ll last. I’ve learned it’s okay to ask for help and rely on outside support. I’ve achieved my goal of creating a venue that fulfills the community’s desire of quiet late night public spaces. I’m excited to see how Blurred Words evolves from here. I’d love for it to become a longstanding staple of the community.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If a friend was visiting Fort Collins, I would of course take them first to my shop Blurred Words. From there, it’s a quick drive to Old Town where we would explore the shops and eateries. A few of my favorites include Old Town Churn Ice Cream, The Welsh Rabbit Cheese Shop, Ku Cha House of Tea, and the Alpine Arts giftshop.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I couldn’t have built Blurred Words without the support of my husband, Matt. He was there at every stage sharing my vision and helping make it a reality. We did a lot of the work ourselves – from painting and wallpapering to building bookcases and partition walls. None of that would have been possible without our good friends Rachal and Randy. They gave up multiple weekends helping us with renovation projects and moving furniture. I am thankful for each of them and their support.
