We had the good fortune of connecting with Liz Sloan and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Liz, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
One thing that has been extremely consistent in my life/career as a creative and influencer is: if there’s no risk, there’s no reward. You don’t have to take a huge leap of faith to become an influencer – start small! During my Batchelor’s at IUP I started my blog Fox & Luxe as a way to escape from every day stressors. My blog was something that was just for me and a few people on the internet. Fast-forward almost six years later, my hobby has now turned into my full-time career. It was a very slow six years, but I don’t regret taking those first steps into social media. Up until January 2022 I wasn’t even sure that I would go into influencing and content creation. I graduated with my Master’s from Drexel University this past December, and was on the edge between finding an arts administration related job or going full-blown social media influencer.
My advice: if you aren’t currently financially capable of switching from a steady flow of income to the crazy world of influencing begin the process by taking small steps that will later accumulate into a big leap. The most important thing for you to do is just put yourself on social media, and introduce yourself to the influencing industry. Post like an influencer! You have to start somewhere. Social media isn’t going anywhere.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
The most important piece of my career is my online community. Every individual who follows me is part of the reason of why I’m an influencer and why I get to wake up and do what I love every day. I am always coming up with ideas and ways to incorporate my audience members and cater to their wants/needs. I recently self-published my “body confidence journal”! It is currently available on Amazon and my website. This journal contains daily prompts in reflection form to help you understand just how beautiful, successful and wonderful you are. There are various prompts to guide you on your way to self-love and overall body confidence. This project was fun for me, but I mainly created the “body confidence journal” as a tool for others to start loving themselves. I know I can speak for other body confidence influencers when I say it is difficult to remember how we first started on our self-love journeys. This journal is a jumpstart for anyone who wants to feel more confident when it comes to body image.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Hands down I would take my bestie to Knockbox Café in West Philly and Chestnut Hill Coffee Company right outside the city in Chestnut Hill.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Joseph Moore (fiancé + assistant, photographer, videographer, etc.) + Diane Duke (mother)
