We had the good fortune of connecting with Liz Wilcox and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Liz, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Honestly? I wanted to hit the road in an RV and travel with my family! And you can’t do that without some way of making your own money.
So while I had a degree in Leadership and was planning on getting into education once my daughter was out of diapers, I axed that whole plan. Instead, I started looking up ways to make money for yourself and stumbled on the whole blogging/content creation thing.
I knew I was good at writing, so I started an RV travel site. And the more I learned about creating an income online, the more seriously I took things.
I began treating it like a real business. Setting goals. Building an audience. Creating products. And even bringing on partners for a second business.
So while the goal was simply to create enough income to live and travel, it turned into two full-fledged businesses. One that I sold outright. And the other that I got bought out of. I now run a third focused on teaching the email marketing tactics + strategies I developed in those first two businesses.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I currently run a digital products + speaking company. I teach brand new entrepreneurs + small businesses how to untangle the email marketing knot.
Like I mentioned before, I started as an RV travel blogger. What I didn’t mention was my lack of internet, the toddler who occupied most of my time, and a bank account that told me I needed to be cheap about things.
Starting this blog as a business wasn’t easy for me. I had to work in the margins of life as a stay-at-home mom. And get really good at listening when someone gave advice because I had no money to invest. On top of driving to libraries and laundromats to get enough internet to send an email or publish a blog post…it was only my drive to make it work that kept things going.
I really believed that what they were saying was true…”the creator economy” was a real thing. And I really believed in my ability to figure it out.
As I traveled around the country, I got really good at creating a very lean business. Both in expenses, and necessary steps to find leads and convert them into customers via email marketing.
Because as it turns out–you don’t actually need expensive software, a huge audience, or a big ads budget. Instead, you just need to find a way to get in front of the right people, connect with them, and offer them products + services that they’re truly interested in.
My big test of that statement was when I finally decided to create a digital course.
I emailed my list and asked if they would be interested in a resource on RV maintenance. 141 people indicated that yes, they’d be interested.
So I went about creating the course and a few months later I had a 5-day launch.
By the end of Day 5, I had made 141 sales.
This is when I knew I truly mastered email marketing. So I sold that business and went all-in on teaching people my methods.
And in the last couple years, I’ve managed to serve over ten thousand of people in 20 countries with my trainings, workshops, and membership.
The biggest lesson I’ve learned?
Always go with your gut. Every good idea I’ve ever had–someone told me it wouldn’t work.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
The term “solopreneur” has always bothered me. There’s just no such thing! We are all connected and there are so many people that have kept me on the entrepreneur’s path since 2016.
First, there is Heath and Alyssa Padgett–their blog was the first RV travel blog I discovered and their laidback approach really helped me think “hey! I could do that, too.” I went on to attend an event they hosted a few years in a row, and without their efforts, I never would have met my first business partners. Plus, they are Colorado residents so we’ve got to shout them out!

I’d also like to shoutout my entire email list + community. I know it might seem a little corny, but without the connections I’ve made from simply emailing people a weekly newsletter? I never would have stayed motivated, created my first product, or made it to multiple six figure status.
My email list isn’t just a bunch of addresses–it’s a list of humans that want to learn + stay in touch with me. It’s an honor to get to know the people on that list and serve them.
