We had the good fortune of connecting with Lizzie Mcintire and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lizzie, why did you pursue a creative career?
The truth is, I’ve always wanted to be a hairstylist. I remember being in awe every time someone took me along with them to their appointment. When I was about five, I cut all the hair off my “My Size Barbie” and hid the hair from my mom because I knew how expensive that doll was! But as I grew up, societal pressures and my strong academic performance led me down a different path. I ended up majoring in Cellular and Molecular Biology, which don’t get me wrong I still find fascinating, but no matter how far I went down that road, something felt off.
It took me five years, three beauty school campuses in 2 different states just to complete beauty school and get my license. What I found in hairstyling was more than just a profession; it was a form of creative expression that allowed me to connect with people on a deep level. I get to use my scientific background in a way that’s hands-on and artistic, which is pretty cool. Understanding hair on a molecular level has given me a unique edge, but it’s the artistry that keeps me inspired every day.
What really drew me in, though, was the realization that hairstyling is so much more than just changing someone’s appearance. It’s about helping people see themselves in a new light, giving them the confidence to express who they truly are. Every client is like a canvas, and every appointment is a chance to create something unique and meaningful.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Root & Shadow is my love letter to those who don’t quite fit into the cookie-cutter salon world. It’s not your typical bright, airy space—it’s cozy, moody, and imbued with a dark academia vibe that feels like home to those who resonate with it. My focus has always been on creating a space where everyone, no matter who they are or how they identify, feels celebrated and free to express their true selves.
The inception of Root & Shadow was driven by both necessity and passion. When I was laid off from my previous salon during the COVID-19 pandemic, I found myself solo in a small basement studio. The transition was challenging, but I used my Instagram handle, “moredonethanabun,” as my business name and faced the challenge head-on. Initially, I was hesitant to fully embrace my personal style, questioning whether it would resonate with clients or even make sense as a brand. However, as time went on, it became clear that staying true to myself was the only path forward.
It wasn’t an easy journey, but through trial, error, and countless late nights, I began to understand what set my work apart. I embraced my style and collaborated with a brand specialist to refine my brand identity and pinpoint my ideal client. This process was transformative, helping me build a business that stands out in a city like Denver, where the salon scene is bustling with options.
After exploring several studio spaces that never quite felt right, I’m thrilled to have found the perfect spot on the main floor of the Metlo. This large, welcoming space aligns perfectly with my vision, and I’m excited to announce that Root & Shadow is expanding. We’ve recently added another talented stylist, Koral, to our community. This new chapter represents everything I’ve worked towards—creating a vibrant, inclusive environment where creativity and individuality can flourish. I’m eager to continue growing this unique space and building a salon that truly feels like home for everyone who walks through our doors.
What I want the world to know about my brand and story is that Root & Shadow is about more than just great hair. It’s about creating a space where people feel seen, heard, and empowered to express their authentic selves. I’m proud of the journey it took to get here, and I’m even more excited about what’s to come.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friend were visiting for a week, I’d make sure they experience the best of Denver. We’d start with a trip to the Denver Botanic Gardens, which is a constant source of inspiration for me. The beauty of this place is truly stunning throughout all seasons, and it’s always worth a visit. After soaking in nature, we’d head to Queen City Coffee at Town Hall Collaborative for some great coffee and a cozy atmosphere. For a bit of retail therapy, we’d check out FashionNation’s new location on South Broadway—perfect for finding unique and alternative fashion pieces.
I’d also take them to explore some quirky spots like Terrorarium and Ritualcravt, especially if they’re into the unusual and macabre. Denver’s music scene is vibrant, so we’d catch a show at one of the city’s underground venues like Hi-Dive, HQ, or Cervantes. When it comes to food, we’d indulge at Somebody People and City O’ City, two of my favorite spots. And to round out the week, we’d have a blast singing karaoke at Rhapsody. Mixing nature, cool spots, and local eats would give my friend a seriously unforgettable taste of Denver’s laid-back vibe and quirky charm.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’ve got to give a huge shoutout to Abby Lambert. She was my mentor at my first salon, and honestly, I wouldn’t be where I am today without her. Abby unexpectedly passed away in 2021, long after my apprenticeship ended, but I think about her all the time.
She taught me everything about how to work in a salon. From her techniques to her consultation style, even down to her sense of humor, Abby’s influence is all over my work. Her way of connecting with people and making them feel seen and heard is something I try to bring into my own practice. I wouldn’t be where I am without her, and I’m forever grateful for the time I had with her.
