We had the good fortune of connecting with Lizzy Beerman and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lizzy, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
When I was in college my major was Fine Art with an emphasis in photography and I almost never shot with people unless I had to. It was much more of a solo pursuit, focusing mostly on landscapes. I was living in Salt Lake City at the time so I would just hop in my car and decide to go either West towards the desert or East towards the mountains and shoot along the way. I love road trips so it was always super fun. It wasn’t until after I graduated that I starting photographing people and I quickly realized that’s what I wanted to do. I’ve always known that I don’t thrive in a structured 9-5 environment, working for someone else, so I was very motivated to create a life where I can enjoy what I do every single day. I live in Silverthorne Colorado, which just so happens to be one of the most beautiful places in the world with incredible landscapes, so I get to combine two things I really love not far from home.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I think what makes one photographer, within the same field, different from another is their process. So much of my process is unique to who I am as a person. When I originally starting photographing people I thought I had to be this fun, bubbly person that could immediately be friends with anyone because I thought that’s what it took to be successful. After about a year of trying to be someone I’m not and leaving sessions feeling so emotionally drained I realized that something had to change, and it was my mindset. I took a step back and thought about what I wanted my work to be and what I was trying to capture. I realized that photographing other people has nothing to do with who I am and what I know but everything to do with who my clients are. I want to tell their story and capture moments of their life. So when I started to truly be myself, and become confident in my process, I was able actually get to know my clients, learn their story, and tell it in a unique, creative way. So I guess my work shifted to being more centered around story telling than just being aesthetically driven. It definitely was not an easy learning process and there is so much more to this career than I ever even realized but that’s what makes it so rewarding.
I guess if I wanted the world to know one thing about my brand it’s that I am a story teller.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would have to start by giving a shoutout to my mom, Cathy. Ever since I can remember she has honestly been my very best friend. She always encouraged me in pursuing whatever I felt drawn to, whether it was photography, professional snowboarding or building out and living in a van for 6 months. The way she lives her life and carries herself gave me the courage to be confident in knowing what I want and believing I was capable of achieving it. I would also like to recognize my loving and supportive husband, Tim. He is also self-employed and is my rock, in life and in business. He is my sounding board and inspires me all the time with his work ethic and motivation for building not just a successful business but also an incredible life.
