We had the good fortune of connecting with Logan Bush and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Logan, what habits do you feel play an important role in your life?
Do it every day. Do it when it doesn’t matter. For example, I wake up at 5 a.m every day and edit photos before work. They are rarely spectacular photos, but it gives me practice for when it really matters.

It’s even more important in the “field.” I’ve taken thousands of meaningless photos of dogs, birds, and deer. But it’s only because I spent that time with my telephoto lens that I was able to snap a great picture of a grizzly bear (as I was walking backwards.)

I know too many people who wait for the perfect moment to do something, whether it be art or other aspects of life, and they are completely unprepared for when it matters because they’re never practiced.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’m most proud of a feature length documentary I directed and edited, called The Last Apostle. It can be viewed several places online including Amazon Prime.

It was the hardest job of my life and it was done completely on my own time and totally separate from my “career.” During my time working in Hollywood I came across a vast amount of people who let their time slip away. They found themselves approaching middle age, or older, and realized they’d bounced from job to job not very proud of anything.

For instance, I met one professional writer who spent a decade having his scripts argued over by producers in meeting. And he made a living off of being a screenwriter, which is far less than 1% of all aspirational writers in Hollywood.

I didn’t come to Los Angeles to be a professional in the film industry. I pursued filmmaking because I wanted to create my own films.

It took two and a half years to create and I did it one day at a time, realizing that if I didn’t finish the film, no one would. The film isn’t completely how I envisioned, but a decent completed project is better than a perfect project that doesn’t exist. I believe this concept is applicable to life. Don’t wait for the perfect time because it will never come.

In a sense the only thing you own is what you’ve created. That cannot be taken from me. It’s possible my film will be seen long after I’m forgotten.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would try to spend at least half of my time outside the city in nature. Rocky Mountain National Park would be an obvious choice, but there’s many alternatives.

In the city, I would eat at a different type of restaurant for each meal and never stick in one place too long.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My parents for encouraging my pursuits and my wife for continuing to put up with them.
