We had the good fortune of connecting with Lucía Alonso Garrido and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lucía, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Of course, the road to becoming an independent freelancer is neither linear nor constant, there are many moments of instability particularly at the beginning, when jobs appear in isolation and you don’t always get as much work every month as you need. I think it takes a mix of hard work, consistency and faith, sometimes you need to trust that things will work out as we don’t work with the stability or the guarantees that regular jobs offer. In my opinion, it is important not to doubt yourself in those moments and to keep the focus on the long term to keep going in the most difficult moments.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My relationship with photography and film began to take shape, although very unpretentiously, when I decided to start taking my camera with me to work every day and take pictures of people’s daily lives on the underground of London. This small gesture made me aware of how we are surrounded by narratives and stories that we can choose not to ignore, and from then on, everything around me started to gain relevance in front of my lens.
What started as a genuine hobby took shape and people started to hire me to take portraits of them, their brands or even their families. Of course, at first I said yes to everything but I soon realised that what interested me most was the artistic language where I had more freedom to interact with the environment, create new scenarios and ultimately connect with and modify reality instead of just portraying it.
Since then my work has focused on two different areas, anthropological-ethnographic projects such as portraying indigenous societies in the Brazilian Amazon, and commercial projects in the field of fashion and advertising, but always trying to apply my vision and way of interpreting the world.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
There are 3 fundamental pillars that represent an infinite source of inspiration and energy for me. These are nature, art and food, so I would try to combine these 3 elements in the best possible way. Maybe starting with a good breakfast in the cafeteria of the museum or a gallery I would visit during the morning, then I would pause for a slow lunch close to nature and finish the day doing some hiking, I feel that walking makes the ideas flow better!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There have undoubtedly been many people who have contributed directly or indirectly to get me here, for example my photography teacher at university was a relevant figure at the beginning of my career. My mother, my partner and some friends have also been essential in helping me to see and invest in what excites me most. I know that not everyone is lucky enough to have a support network to back up their decisions and I consider myself very fortunate to have been able to have that unconditional support that allowed me to take riskier decisions.
I hope I can continue to find those spontaneous teachers and references to keep inspiring me along the way.
