We had the good fortune of connecting with Lyzrd and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lyzrd, how do you think about risk?
For myself, risk has been the deciding factor in my journey. A 17 year old Lyzrd was a failing student, depressed, and developing a serious pill habit. I made the decision to leave high school halfway through Junior year. I risked my future to drop out and enroll in a trade school for media… And get my g.e.d. I saw a future in learning to design products and developing the technical acumen to improve the quality of my music. This paid me back tenfold. I met many people there such as Klassy, Clutch Lyfe, Jack Miller, Melly3e, and many more. This taught me bet on me no matter what. Since then I have gone into debt many times on creative ideas and I am still here. If you wont take a chance on you. Who will?
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am Lyzrd. I rap. I play that guitar. I make stickers. My passion is all things alternative. I advocate the path less taken. No chains no watches. I prefer beads. My journey started with playing bluegrass in western North Carolina and has taken me to many stages and studios, and recently the rocky mountains. Along the way clothing, hats, and stickers have joined the list of what I do. The bottom line is Live. Live your life. Make your own way.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I love my friends like family. I had a challenging upbringing and many times my friends were the only refuge from my mothers revolving door of toxic men, and my fathers alcoholism. Through that I always had great friends. As I mature and become more successful the most important thing is to show them my gratitude. Catch up on their life, how they have been. Then party. Zips on me. Bottles on me. Food on me. Come visit me on the mountain and we will shred all day long. It’s important to me now to show my long time friends a great time. I know how much we went through to get to this point.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to dedicate my shoutout to 2 people off the top: first off, my absent dead beat father. Not much of a dad but a hell of a music teacher. For most of my life we have only spoken over the phone but nonetheless he gave me the “go for it” to drop out and pursue my dreams. Priceless. SECONDLY: Mr. Raphael Boyce aka CLUTCH LYFE. You could call him my mentor in rap, partner in rhyme, best friend, brother, and the first person I call relating to anything creative. We spent some years in and after media school relentlessly shooting videos, recording, editing movies, mixing down audio, and burning backwoods of course. When it comes to the arts theres no one else I trust like clutchmaan!
