We had the good fortune of connecting with Madeline Gregg and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Madeline, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Vampire Shot Glass started with a viral video on TikTok. I simply referred to a menstrual cup as a vampire shot glass. People were saying how much they would love a Vampire Shot Glass menstrual cup so a couple of days later I hired a lawyer and started the trademark process. As a sex educator I thought it would be a small project- almost like “merch” but it’s quickly become my life’s work. As a queer sex educator that specializes in queer sex ed and gender inclusive content I saw a need for radically gender inclusive menstrual products. Not only using gender inclusive language but representing everyone who menstruates- not just feminine people.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Vampire Shot Glass is a radically gender inclusive menstrual cup. We strive for gender inclusion in all areas of the brand. From gender inclusive language on our instructions to putting transgender men and non-binary people at the front of our advertisements and social media. We also believe education in menstrual care and sexual education is extremely important when it comes to having a menstrual product brand. The education doesn’t stop once you read the instructions- we want everyone to be confident using a menstrual cup. It was not easy starting this brand. Just 3 years ago I was a stay at home mom, my background is in American Sign Language, not business. So figuring out not only how to develop a company but also how to run it has been a challenge. I have hired out the things I simply don’t know how to do (like building a website), but for the most part this is a one person show. There have been a lot of sleepless nights of trying to Google how to do things when it has come to this business.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I live in Louisville KY, it’s a foodie town with a lot of nightlife. I would start with a farmers market stroll in the morning, sailing on the Ohio river, and finish up the day doing a food crawl trying to find the best appetizer in NULU.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
There have been tons of people who have contributed to Vampire Shot Glass. Gwenna- aka MommaCusses is the one who stitched my original TikTok. She has been cheering this company on from day one and I am forever thankful for her that she shared her platform. Secondly my partner Pat- they are transgender and have been a huge inspiration of this brand. They have helped on the back end of things and contributed a lot of their time to the logistical side of Vampire Shot Glass. They’re been there while I said I was in over my head and this first to pop champaign for the successes.
And lastly my good friend Emily- she is a lawyer and has connected me to all of the right people. She has not only been by my side from the time I came to her with this idea but she has spent nights awake trying to brainstorm opportunities to help me soar. She’s the type of friend that everyone needs in their life and I am so lucky we found each other.
