We had the good fortune of connecting with Maestra Wendy C. Carrion and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Maestra Wendy C., what is the most important factor behind your success?
? I would say love is the most important factor in the success of my business. My business is also a lifestyle. Nurturing my business comes easy for me in the sense that it doesn’t feel like work or a chore. There are so many demands within my business with their own little idiosyncracies. These fungi are supremely intelligent. They emit a vibratory language I’m learning near fluency. I like saying that we cultivators grow them, but in actuality they’re the ones growing us. How can I not love what I do?
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
What sets me apart from others? For many people, mold is abhorred. It’s universally disinclined. I was one of those people before I started cultivating fungi. Immersing myself in this lifestyle, I have discovered that they have this intoxicatingly, intriguing presence. It’s my firm belief that molds are the ultimate Truth Tellers they let us know what is going on in the environment. So I see them as a puzzle piece that subtly fits between science and spirituality.
What you are most excited about?
One of the most current things I am excited about is one of the largest myco-projects I’m leading in Las Vegas, Nevada with a Forbes listed eco conscious company. This company will be one of the first in Nevada to introduce fungi to their waste. We’re piloting this project for four months, so we’ll see what happens! My goal is to facilitate fungi at the forefront of waste management.
Imagine the possibilities! I love introducing people to all the innovative ways we can use fungi.
How did you get to where you are today professionally?
I have had to explore healing myself first through the practice of mushroom/plant medicine. By getting acquainted with numerous species, cultivating different fungi, learning through trial and error, attending countless workshops, joining forays throughout the country, and doing relentless research, as well as incorporating my own healer qualities, I simply allow these medicines to work through and along side of me. I am continually inspired by these fantastical beings! Everything I’m learning I incorporate in my business: as a healer, cultivator, and teacher. They remind me how so very much in our infancy we all are as a species, regardless of our age.
Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges?
Nothing good comes easy. There have been many challenges along the way. Practicing these medicines doesn’t make you immune to feeling challenged, but it definitely helps you shift perspective. I meditate a lot, every day actually; this keeps me centered, focused, and grounded to where I feel I can overcome anything that lands my way. This journey has had some rough bumps along the way, with lots of trips and falls, but I wouldn’t change one thing since I’m still learning so much while feeling inspired by every facet of my business.
What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way?
As a teacher/healer it’s my primary responsibility to always be a student first. I meet a lot of people who apologize for not knowing something. Never apologize for learning something new. On the other hand: it’s okay to not know, one will find most answers when there’s that burning desire to learn.
Self care is crucial. It’s as much a requirement as devoting relentless hours to a business. I think self care is an important prerequisite for enriching one’s life. The more self care is honored, the more in tune one can be to oneself and others. Why? Because there’s less stagnancy, there’s more openness to receive. There’s more creative potential, more uniqueness…more flair with how one does things.
Communication is of great importance! Whether it’s a student or a client, ( or in many of my cases, mold) you’ve got to keep that line of communication open! Every voice matters, every living being matters. Cultivating and practicing medicine in the manner that I do, the lessons at the core of communication: vibration and frequency.
Lastly, I think one of the most powerful lessons I continue learning is it’s important to embrace every aspect of ourselves, whether they’re strengths or what many times we deem as weaknesses. These can be valuable assets when we shift our perspectives with how we treat ourselves and one another. Do you think I would be doing this interview if I was worried about my uniqueness? Hell no!
What do you want the world to know about you or your brand/story?
Fungi are the past, they are the present, and they are the future. They’re in everything, including us. They are just as alive with consciousness as we are. I introduce people to what I have learned growing, finding, or consuming them. They will be the future for many industries. The more the public is educated to all the beneficial uses these otherworldly microorganisms offer, the more we can collaborate as a species to leave our planet in better shape than what it currently is in. Universal innovation is key to a flourishing humanity.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My shoutouts go to Almighty Source. Every single event that I have experienced has led me (and you, Dear Reader) to where we are this very moment. To the Fungi and all of the Plant Allies that offer some of Life’s most ancient teachings when we’re willing to listen; they indeed are Master Teachers. To all my loved ones who have challenged, supported, and loved me just as I am, most especially my daughter Jasmine: thank you so much for your extraordinary love and inspiring patience with Mumsy. Lastly, to all my wonderful mentors, students, clients, benefactors, and colleagues, this journey wouldn’t be what it is without all of you mentioned. I bow in gratitude.
