We had the good fortune of connecting with Maggie Emerson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Maggie, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
This business began because of a long line of learning from other business’ I ran. The one that inspired Beaucoup Babe the most was my business where I hand made seed bead earrings. When I first started making earrings, I would charge what I thought was ‘fair’ without any consideration of my time, costs and skillset. This mindset set me up for some struggle in my financial world until I learned how to price my products in a way that would not only allow me to pay myself a livable wage, but also open me up to becoming a profitable business.

When I learn something that changes my world dramatically, I always want to share it to the world in a way that makes it more simplified and streamlined for others, and that is how I came to be teaching other entrepreneurs about both the practical and the magical ways of allowing yourself and your business to be profitable.

What should our readers know about your business?
Beaucoup Babe is dedicated to supporting Creative Entrepreneurs plan for profit.

This all started from my own struggle with finances both personal and financial and working my way out of debt and undervaluing my products and services, to becoming the CFO of both my life and business.

Getting to where I am today was not easy. I was a single mom running on caffine trying to make everything work and feeling like a sinking ship with just the right size bailer to keep me afloat. I avoided finances like the plague and was terribly confused why I was working so hard yet my bank account did not show anything that matched the amount of effort I was putting into my business.

I was very focused on the ‘magical manifestation’ and thinking that if I just got X amount of money, then everything would be better. Boy was I wrong.

It took some time for me to build the courage to actually look my finances in the eye and see that it wasn’t that I needed more money in the bank to fix my money problem, it was that I needed to implement practical systems in both my life and business to understand money and to be able to keep more of it for me instead of it flying out the door faster than it came in.

For me, numbers and looking at my bank account was incredibly scary. What I learned was once you get over the fear of your numbers and begin to look at what is possible for you financially if you take the time, your financial world can change dramatically in a short period of time.

This is how I came to my unique way of teaching finances and profit to Creative Entrepreneurs. I combine both the practical and the magical aspects of money to allow for each individual to feel confident pricing their products and services.

My biggest lesson I’ve learned is to play the long game. So often we are caught up in keeping up with the Jones or trying to look a certain way to prove we are successful that we lose the ability to create a solid financial future. Immediate gratification doesn’t last long, setting yourself up for future financial success daily is a total game changer and one that your future self will thank you for.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Oh my goodness!! If a friend would be visiting, here’s the itinerary we would have:

Day 1 – Slow wake up and breakfasat at home then head out to Durango Coffee Company for our fav hot beverages and take those beverages on a walk down main show them my favorite shops. We’d have to check out Lively, a boutique, Animas Trading Company, and Maria’s Book Shop. After some shopping we’d need to get a bite to eat and we would head to EsoTerra Ciderworks for some charcuterie and an apple juice slushie or cider of choice. We’d take an evening walk along the river trail, ending at Oxbow park to stick our toes in the water and enjoy the river.

Day 2 – Up and at ’em early, we’d head to Silverton to hike the Ice Lakes Trail – we’d have a lovely picnic lunch at the like, hike up to Island lake and make our way down to the car. We’d stop in Silverton to grab a hot or cold bevy of choice at Coffee bear and make our way back to Durango to show and head out for dinner at 11th street station where we get to chose from a selection of food trucks to satisfy our very hungry bodies and enjoy some live music.

Day 3 – We’re staying close to home and still doing a hike. We get up somewhat early to hike Animas Mountain Trail. After our hike, we head downtown for some Tacos at Switch back. We take our happy full and tired bodies to the river to soak and watch all the water activities. Dinner is at 636.

Day 4 – We’re going to spend the day at Lake Night Horse paddle boarding, swimming and enjoying Colorado Lake Life. For dinner, we come back to town to enjoy a Burger at El Moro.

Day 5 – We’re going back to the high country in Silverton to hike Highland Mary Lakes. We bring our lunch and snacks and enjoy a full day up in the mountains. On the way home we stop at Trimble Hot Springs for a long soak and some live music, Uncle Kelsey is the featured artist. They have food trucks for us to fill our hungry bodies.

Day 6 – We’re taking it a little slower today. We’re headed to a yoga class with Celestia French at the Smiley building. After class, we’re grabbing some light fare at the Smiley Cafe, then we’re doing another lap on main street to pick out any items we saw that we loved and didn’t yet purchase. We’ve got dinner reservations at The Yellow Carrot.

Day 7 – Saturday – we’re headed to the farmers market to enjoy the community and delicious treats and amazing vendors the Durango Farmers market has to offer. We’re having a slow day. On our way home we swing by Still Life Coffee and Plants for a Ruby Ginger and head home to delight in remembering our amazing week.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to dedicate this shoutout to a dear friend and mom-like figure in my life, Loretta Milo. Loretta was the first person I met when I moved to the USA, she welcomed me into her life immediately and has taught me to trust myself, let go of the things that matter, and to value myself and my skillset and to focus on what matters most.

I am also grateful to have an incredible close circle that supports me through this beautiful adventured called life.
