We had the good fortune of connecting with Maggie Heppard and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Maggie, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Design essentially is risk. Each fabric you choose, the wallpaper to complete your powder, the choice of polished nickel vs antique brass. As a Interior Designer, it is your job to guide the client in risk taking. They are trusting me to ensure that risk meets their needs/wants, and I have to be confident in that decision. Starting this business was and continues to be a risk every day. It is not guaranteed, and I have to work really hard to ensure that it takes me to the next job. Sometimes I fail, but every risk has led me exactly where I need to be. My goal in doing this career is to teach my children that taking risks is part of life, and can give you great success.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Prior to Denver, I lived in San Francisco where I was apart of a design firm. As many experienced during COVID-19, my entire team was laid off. I knew I wanted to be involved in interior design but wasn’t keen to working under someone. Thankfully, I learned a ton of the vital business side to design, which was essential to my start. This past year I had the opportunity to do my first retail space, Bellissima in Platt Park. My daughter was two weeks at the time and I knew it was an opportunity I had to follow through with. It was so fun, and my children both have good experiences with some job sites!
I would say I am most proud of where I am now. I just made my first hire this year, and it has changed the game for me immensely. Claire’s knowledge of operations has expanded our growth and pushed me to see things in a different light. I am so excited for the projects we are working on currently. They all feel super authentic to my style and what I gravitate towards, and I can’t wait to see it come together.
I’d like to be a designer that is always relatable. I have two young kids, I understand what to put your money towards and where you can save. I’d love each home I touch to feel comfortable yet collected. Antiques, different textures, a pop of pattern, something collected among your travels.
I’ll never forget my first boss said to me, ” I wake up every day excited to do this job.” I feel incredibly lucky to do what I love and look forward to whatever the future holds.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would definitely have my friends visit in the summer, it is my favorite time of the year! My favorite spot to spend mornings is a coffee and ham & gruyere croissant at Devils Food, a walk around Wash Park, and stopping by New Americana home for a little shopping. You cannot beat the Broadway antique shops, followed by drinks at the Halcyon Rooftop and dinner at Satchels. Sushi Den, Quality Italian and YaYa’s are more of my favorites.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My Mom! An Interior Designer herself, she has been integral in my growth and connections in the Denver industry. I am always amazed by her firms work, and the mentality she has surrounding the balance of it all. She is encouraging, tough, and knows how to handle just about everything. Her values and dedication to her career are consistent examples to me in what it means to be hard working!
