We had the good fortune of connecting with Maia del Mazo and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Maia, what do you attribute your success to?
I believe there are three core factors behind my success: Honesty, Transparency, and Passion. Cliché as this answer may sound, passion is number one, as I suspect it is for many small business owners. To be successful as your own boss, you need to be passionate about your path. Mine lies in helping my clients achieve pain-free lives. A passion for helping people and being the best healer I can be. In my massage program, we were constantly asked why we wanted to be massage therapists. My answer was simple: a massage therapist dramatically changed my life, by helping me through a back injury that had me bed-ridden, and I want to provide to my clients the same support, pain-relief, and tools for recovery that she provided for me. With my intimate and direct knowledge and understanding of how difficult it is to live with pain every day, and how much it can affect someones life, I feel incredibly driven to help others get out from under such a dark and heavy blanket. The feeling I get when my clients share their progress and relief with me, is indescribable. Helping people helps me, and this drives me daily to remain committed to my vision and career.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
As a young business, just getting started, I know I have a lot to learn and a long way to go to reach my ultimate goals. Has it been easy so far? No, not particularly. Not always. I remember one day in the very first stages of building my website, I told my friend I couldn’t get dinner because I wasn’t done working for the day and I wanted to complete my tasks. He wasn’t satisfied with this answer. “You work all the time,” he said, “but it’s not like you’re getting paid.” But that’s just it, isn’t it? That’s what it is to work for yourself. You pour your heart and soul into a thing. A project, a business, a poem, whatever it is, and maybe it flops. Or maybe, possibly, it blossoms into something beautiful. So no, it isn’t always easy, but what it always is, is rewarding. The biggest lesson I’ve learned so far, is to just be yourself. Do you. If you’re on the right path, and passionate about where you’re headed, good things will follow.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’ll be honest, I haven’t been in Boulder very long. However, I did recently have a friend come visit for a week, and we had an absolute blast. To celebrate our reunion, we drove straight form the Denver airport to Jovanina’s Broken Italian, and stuffed ourselves silly in the lovely atmosphere. Throughout the week, we kept things moving with adventures of different categories, from hiking the Flatirons, to visiting the Saturday morning farmers market near the Bandshell, to swimming in the creek next to the library. Day time activities in Colorado seem limitless. Arguably, one of my favorite night time activities to do with visiting friends, however, would have to be sitting on the roof for happy hour at Rosetta Hall. With the relaxed atmosphere, views of the Flatirons, and tasty drinks, I think it’s my favorite date night spot, or jumping off point for a night out.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d like to give a shoutout to the massage therapist who worked on me during such a low point in my life. I was beginning to lose hope of returning to pain-free movement, and through her patience and dedication to finding the root of my pain, she helped me immensely, and set me on my current path.
