We had the good fortune of connecting with Mara Prendergast and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Mara, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I moved to Golden from Phoenix in 2018 and immediately identified that the group fitness experiences I loved in the Phoenix/Scottsdale area were not available near me. I had worked in fitness since 2001 and pretty quickly realized this was my sign to finally open a studio.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Opening and running Unite is the hardest thing I have ever done – harder than divorce or having twins. It has taught me more life lessons, too – perseverance, how to guard and share your energy, “compartimentalizing” self-discipline, and empathy for (almost) anybody.

It is still challenging every day. But witnessing people transform their lives and truly find self-love, happiness, and strength from coming to our classes gives me so much happiness and makes the sacrifice worth it. I also love being a participant and teaching classes so much. Teaching is one of the few things I do that forces me to be 100% present and in the moment with my class.

Unite Fitness is a local group fitness studio with a foundation in functional strength training. We are different in that we offer an optimal variety of movement formats to keep your body moving in many different ways. It is important to maintain a high level of mobility, injury-free, and strength to have a wide variety of workouts in your routine.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I live in Golden. My favorite places are hanging by Clear Creek and biking along the trail into the canyon.
I would take them for a healthy lunch at Kona bowls for lunch and a fun dinner at The Golden Mill. Of course, I always do a workout or yoga class a Unite once a day.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My partner, Nathan, for his support in the rest of our busy lives so I can commit so much time to Unite Fitness.
