We had the good fortune of connecting with Marci Marie Simmons and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Marci Marie, what do you attribute your success to?
Authenticity. People have been drawn to me simply just being me. I express myself openly, honestly and authentically even when it feels uncomfortable.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I started telling my story on social media to address the elephant in the room so to speak. Yes, I went to prison. Yes, you can ask me about it. No, I’m not the same person I was before. People started asking me all kinds of questions online and I just started answering them with the raw truth. This opened opportunities for speaking engagements and even a production deal for a television series. My online presence is opening people’s eyes to the injustices in our system and changing the narrative for people with criminal backgrounds. It is not only opening doors for myself but for those coming behind me as well. It’s important that we continue to break down the stigma that comes with a felony background and understand that one’s worse mistake or decision doesn’t define who that person is today. Telling my story on social media has opened up so many opportunities for me. I have a production deal with Rosie O’Donnell’s production company to make a series about my life getting out of prison. Rosie found me on TikTok! Can you imagine?
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I was born in Florence, CO…. I am a mountain girl at heart and take anyone and everyone willing hiking and celebrating the beauty of my home state
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Lioness: Justice Impacted Women’s Alliance played a huge role in helping me find a space where my lived experience in the Texas Prison System was an asset and not just an embarrassment. They are a group made of formerly and currently incarcerated women and girls that advocate for the specific and often overlooked needs of incarcerated women and girls. Lioness taught me how to use my voice to make real change within the prison system.
