We had the good fortune of connecting with Marissa Talamante and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Marissa, what habits do you feel helped you succeed?
I really believe that the best habit to succeed is self-introspection. It’s really easy to get caught up in work, life, the world and before you know it you’re lost. Self-introspection keeps me grounded in making sure that what I’m doing and how I’m doing it aligns with who I want to become and what I want to accomplish. It sounds cheesy, but I really do feel lost if I don’t practice this habit. To me there’s really no point in doing anything if you’re not doing it with intention and purpose. If you believe in what you’re doing it adds so much value to your life. In order to know what you believe in and what you care about you have to have honest conversations with yourself. Self introspection doesn’t mean bashing on yourself. I think a lot of people think that’s what it is, but it’s not. It means keeping your self in check with everything. It means knowing your strengths and your weaknesses. It helps you realize and understand what you bring to the table and also helps you realize that you’re going to need support too.

If you can’t talk to yourself, why would anyone else?

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Insurance Broker was never on the list of things I wanted to grow up to be, but somehow I found myself in the family insurance business. My grandfather was the first to get his license, then my mother got hers as well. I joined the fun a few years after my mom started the business and we slowly added on over the years. I love my job, which I know sounds weird since I’m in insurance, but I really do. I specialize in Health Insurance, but I’m licensed in Property and Casualty insurance as well. If you have Health Insurance, you know it’s not an easy thing to navigate. Helping people go through the process of signing up for Health Insurance is way more fulfilling than I ever thought it would be. I’ve met some amazing people who started off as clients, but left as friends. The people, my clients, they are what make the job so worth it and so good.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
We live in Colorado…the state of microbreweries and Pagosa has some great ones! I would absolutely take anyone to Riff Raff and have a beer. Walking main street would also be a must do. There are some really cute shops along the stretch including an amazing book store. I love to kayak and we have so many beautiful lakes that we wouldn’t have enough time to enjoy all of them, but Lake Capote and Echo Lake we would absolutely do. There are family potlucks pretty much every weekend that we would go to. Once people meet my family they would understand what I mean when I say I have the Hispanic version of my “My Big Fat Greek Wedding.” If you haven’t watched that movie, please do. The rest of the time would be spent hiking and just talking on my porch. I truly believe that there’s nothing better than having a cup of coffee or a beer on a porch and given the chance I’d convince my friend of that too.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’m the oldest of three. I have a younger brother and a younger sister. My siblings are a huge driving force in my life. I want to do better and be better and make good changes in the world because of them and for them. I want to be someone who they can be proud of. When I grow up I want to be like them. They are the most loving people I could ask for and their love is what makes me keep growing as a person.

Also my grandparents. I was the 5th generation in my family and I’m lucky to have so many grandparents in my life even as an adult. I have 2 grand mothers, 2 grandfathers, and 1 great-grandmother. Growing up we didn’t go to day care, we went to our grandparents. They were a huge part of my childhood and were/are still my best friends. I hope I can make them proud and happy to be such a big part of who I am and who I will become.

Normally cliches kill me, but I’ll be a cliche for this one. My partner Anthony most definitely deserves a shout out. The past few years have been challenging and there have definitely been some times where I wasn’t sure about myself. I’m so grateful for him being there believing in me even when I didn’t’ believe in myself.

Really anyone who has come into my life deserves a shoutout. No matter how small the interaction was it mattered to me and all of the people have helped me and supported me in someway.
