We had the good fortune of connecting with Matt Solomon and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Matt, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I have started and launched several businesses. Each was a unique opportunity to offer products or services that were not readily available at the time. In the beginning, my thought process was an overwhelming excitement as I learned new markets and the “how to” for starting a business. Now, that same excitement is applied to planning necessary systems and future steps that come with growth. Addressing the next steps before they are realized, so that the business delivers in a way the client expects, is a big portion of the workload as I fully embrace and enjoy the process of creating, delivering, and sharing “something new.”
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I wrote and published a book this past year. I was told by one of my college professors, now a friend, that when a book is released, it no longer matters what the author thinks or wants for it to become – the meaning and take-away of the book belongs to the readers and often it takes a much different path than what was planned by the author.
The book I published, Fortunate Accidents, uses the platform of my life and experiences as an athlete, entrepreneur, and civic leader to teach lessons on awareness, mindfulness, resilience, and emotional maturity. This book shares a formula, or philosophical belief, for manifesting Fortunate Accidents in one’s life. My goal was the share humble and entertaining lessons for leadership and growth. During the process of writing the book, it took its own form that strayed form my original plan, becoming lessons taught through a memoir-styled narrative. Now published, the feedback being received goes much deeper than I could have imagined, supporting the sentiment of my college professor.
The feedback leaves me feeling that I truly am offering something positive to those around me – in a much more meaningful way than I could have imagined. One email recently said, “I wish you had read this book years ago because it would have changed my life.” About a week after that, I received a second message from someone else sharing a very similar sentiment, telling me that “the book forces me to question my own sense if self-awareness and enthusiasm. It has been an amazing and impactful read.”
If the community is able to obtain personal insight and a connection so deep from my shared experiences, then I am humbled, honored, and highly complimented. It validates the hard work that went into spending a life working towards improving myself as a person and a leader. It also rewards me for the labor of love that went into sharing these lessons in the book.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
My favorite spot in the city…. is far away from the city! There is so much to do right out the door in the Town and County of Eagle, Colorado. We have a whitewater park downtown, off-road driving around the corner, world-class hunting and fishing, 100-miles of mountain biking, and restaurants and bars that offer a small town feel with international flavor. What’s your fancy and we will get it done.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There is no singular group deserving of a Shoutout…. Everyone in my life has and continues to contribute to my forward momentum and success. There is a lesson to be learned from every interaction. I am awestruck daily at how fortunate I am to be surrounded by the people that cross my path daily. These people have encouraged, challenged, mentored, supported, and allows me to offer the same for them. If I may offer any advice or insight for you today, it would be to remember this with every interaction you have. The results and positive input may not be immediately visible, so we all need to have some faith that it is there.
