We had the good fortune of connecting with May Be Fern and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi May Be Fern, what do you want your legacy to be?
As a band we want our legacy to be one of inclusion, visibility and empowerment. Our goal is to be a core part of change within the music industry. By dismantling male-dominated and heteronormative spaces, we want to show that there is space for femme and queer people in music, and also work to create more. May Be Fern wants to inspire a lasting feeling within those that listen to our music; one of euphoria and connection.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
We are a queer funk-rock band. What sets our music apart is that we don’t write in any specific genre, which honors our four extremely diverse musical backgrounds. We also put a huge emphasis on creating a fully produced show, down to every last musical and aesthetic detail. To get ourselves to this point, we have had to fight tirelessly against biases surrounding our gender and age. We have received countless comments in professional settings that assume our incompetence and degrade our abilities. From these experiences we have built up an immense trust in ourselves/each other, and have gained a deep understanding of the importance of what we are creating through our music.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
We’ll start the day by going to Drag Brunch at Hamburger Mary’s, then we’ll make our way over to Ritualcravt to do aura readings and pick out a couple crystals. Next we’ll get tattoos done at The Wolf Den. Finally, we’ll get appetizers at the Roxy on Broadway before heading out to a May Be Fern show to wrap up the evening 🙂

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Yes! There are too many people to list 🙂

We’ll start by shouting out Jason Spillman (Bass Dad). He has supported the band at every step of our journey — from allowing us to use his music studio as a rehearsal space, to being present at every show, to even supporting the production of our first EP “Okay Grandma, Your Turn”. He has been May Be Fern’s unwavering supporter since day 1.

We also want to call out our manager, Madison Hernandez. She works tirelessly to uplift women and femme creators and has been a huge source of light and inspiration for the band.

Truly, everyone who has ever shown us support is deeply appreciated and deserves a big shoutout!
